5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Book Yet in a Great Series 2 Sept. 2014
By Michael A. Burstein - Published on
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
The Gustav Gloom books have just been getting better and better. The last book left us with a major cliffhanger, and Cryptic Carousel starts right where that book ends. We get to learn a lot more about Fernie and Gustav, plus we get to see Fernie, who has been a major protagonist throughout the series, really shine a lot in this book. The carousel is a delightful invention, and as Fernie and Gustav explore its abilities, we begin to see how the resolution of this series will take shape. The series will delight both young and old; this particular volume of the series will also make any reader glad to have started on the journey with Gustav and the members of the What family.
5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book and wonderful series 24 Sept. 2014

I rarely write reviews, but my 7 year old daughter is such a tremendous fan of the book, and of the series, that I feel compelled to do so. She loves this series in a way that I can remember loving certain books when I was a little girl - getting to know and admire the characters, reluctant to read it too quickly and have it end too soon, always hoping to find a book that captures her attention and imagination as much as this one has. This is a particularly perfect book for kids that like books or movies that are a little bit dark, without being too scary (think movies like Coraline or Matilda).

This is another delightful addition to the Gustav Gloom saga, and like the preceding volumes it contains a marvelous blend of humor and horror. These books with their unusual and wonderful characters are sure to become classics. I buy them for my young cousin, but I enjoy reading them myself before giving them to him. And isn't the mark of a good children's book that it can be enjoyed by readers of any age?
5.0 out of 5 stars It is a fun, easy read 20 Feb. 2015

A delightfully child-like fantasy story about a little boy who MUST live in a house with a bunch of ghosts. He becomes friends with two twin girls who move in next door. The writing reminds me of Diana Wynne Jones' Chrestomanci series. It is a fun, easy read, with some more mature themes addressed (like how Parental units are not always right or perfect).
