Product Description

"The aliens had arrived

With gifts, warnings, and an offer we
couldn't refuse....

Our choice was simple: we could be cannon fodder, or we could be ... fodder. We could send our forces to fight and die (as only humans can) against a ravening horde that was literally feeding on its interstellar conquests—or remain as we were—virtually weaponless and third in line for brunch.

We chose to fight.

Thanks to alien technology and sheer guts, the Terrans on two worlds fought the Posleen to a standstill. Thank God there was a moment to catch our breath, a moment, however brief, of peace—.

Now, for the survivors of the Barwhon and Diess Expeditionary Forces, it was a chance to get some distance from the blood and misery of battle against the Posleen centaurs. A blessed chance to forget the screams of the dying in purple swamps and massacres under searing alien suns.

For Earth it was an opportunity to flesh out their force of raw recruits with combat-seasoned veterans. Political, military and scientific blundering had left the Terran forces in shambles-and with the Posleen Invasion only months away, these shell-shocked survivors might be the only people capable of saving the Earth from devastation.

If the veterans had time to lick their wounds.

Because the Posleen don't read schedules.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic SF 13 Dec 2004
By Harry
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I have never felt I should review a book before but I have just finished this one and it is excellent. This is Footfall with tactics and Starship troopers without the politics. The enemy are believable and the heros have feet of clay sometimes.
I cannot recommend this book high enough.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gust Front 14 Feb 2010
By S. REID
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Typical John Ringo writing, rich in military knowledge but with a common touch for those who have never served. This is part of the posleen war series , possible to read on its own but best if read from the start and takes us into the fight for the humna races survival in the USA led by our favourite character Mike O'Neal.
Would love to see more books about the rise of the O'Neal clan added to the series as the follow on books Callys war/Sister Time etc , with Rejuvenation there is plenty of life left in the universe although the books later on cover the Darhel/Peaceful Posleen/Earths future all in further fill in stories in further editions.
Main point is if you ever read any of his books and enjoyed them then you will enjoy this one. He has consistently written well and done what few manage not written a bad book so far( not many can claim that).

This is a good continuation of the saga started in A HYMN BEFORE DYING, and I do urge you to read that book before this one. The first book deals with preliminary battles aimed at slowing down the dreaded Posleen before they land on Earth. In this book, they indeed land on Earth and the armed forces battle them and also rather muddled military bureaucracy.
The main characters are of course largely carry-overs from the first book: Michael O'Neal, Duncan, Pappas, and others. Some new characters are introduced including two or three that are only very briefly introduced but who will undoubtedly play much larger roles in the third book.
Music is introduced in this book and specific music is recommended for both the fictional characters and for the reader to listen to while reading.
Also noticeable in this installment is the author's use of dialogue. Several times, a scene ends with a piece of dialog from one character and is followed by the same piece of dialog from another character's mouth in a very different scene. Interesting technique.
The reader is credited with intelligence. In at least one instance, a couple of characters are mentioned, but not by name. Yet, you do know of course who they are, and do realize that they undoubtedly will be more important characters in the next installment.
One more thing to notice here is that we get a better look at the enemy which was largely faceless in the first book and will probably become even more of the next book.
I'm inclined toward being a dove and not into military fiction, but this book is well written and kept me interested all the way through. Those who really are into the military frame of mind should really love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Defending Earth City by City 8 May 2001
Format:Hardcover
Now the attack has com to earth, and humanity must fight it's hardest battle yet.
The sequel to A Hymn Before Battle continues the Earth battle against the Poslean who are now invading earth in massive hoards. Great action and wonderful how Ringo manages to also put in the touches of honor, duty, sacrifice and love into a great story.

4.0 out of 5 stars magnificent read 7 July 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The application of military engineering to construct terrain corridors and choke points into killing zones was great to read. The use of anti-personnel mines and demolitions to funnel and destroy the horses was as accurate as could be expected unless you had done it yourself. The only downside with this book was the lack of military aviation to either control artillery fire or plug gaps. The experiences of the non-combatants was glossed over and I am sure it would have coloured the book differently with local forces being willing to fight in place, particularly national guard or reserve units if they thought they were surrendering their families and friends to the horses.

Could not put the book down and wife has gone to bed alone for the last two nights as I stayed up to read it. Will have to wait a bit before I get to read the first and next books!

4.0 out of 5 stars massacre the Aliens 21 April 2014
By IAN CAMERON-MOWAT VINE VOICE
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Jonny Ringo strikes again! Engrossing military action from an ex-soldier as the Aliens are fought off. You are so close you can smell it. Does get a tiny bit "same old same old".
Unfortunately, he was an American soldier-the US wins every battle and then loses the war (opposite of Britain).
So apparently, in the next book, Earth loses big time.
Can't get excited about that one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Unremitting pace and action. 7 Mar 2014

Unremitting pace.

My head hurt half way through, but worth the effort. Guess there only so many verbs for slaughtering so many enemies.

5.0 out of 5 stars up there with any l. ron hubbard books
Initially started slow then gathered momentum and became hard to put down, not the first book in the series but as I'm now reading the prequels I think it was a good hook.

While not my usual style of sf. This proved to be really interesting. My only critical point was that the storyline staggered to much for me
