This book is every bit as good as the previous two in the Guru's Guide series. If you have either one and appreciated its value then do not hesitate - buy this book!
Mr. Henderson takes a guided technical approach to the subject matter (n.b. all code examples in C++) providing lots of excellent examples to work through as he illustrates the concepts. This is an advanced book in my opinion yet it remains very accessible and very engrossing.
Furthermore, if you liked Kalen Delaney's book "Inside SQL Server 2000" and wanted to take your understanding of SQL Server 2000 that bit further and also get some info on the recent extensions to SQL Server 2000* then I would also say that this is the book for you!
This book has a more practical approach than "Inside" and takes the subject of SQL Server architecture much further in my opinion. This is especially true with regard to how SQL Server interacts with the OS. Having said that, I think that this book and "Inside" complement each other very nicely indeed.
The accompanying CD is also full of valuable content.
* The book includes chapters on Notification Services and SQLXML but there is no chapter on Reporting Services (still in beta at the time of publication). "Inside" was published prior to any of these extensions to the core product becoming available.
