Nel piccolo villaggio di Idar, il giovane Gurukant, figlio del professore del paese, coltiva timidamente sogni di grandezza, vessato dal padre che lo giudica un incapace. Gurukant Desai decide quindi di fuggire in Turchia, per fare fortuna nel mercato delle spezie, ma non riuscendo ad aprire un'attività in proprio, preferisce fare ritorno a Mumbai piuttosto che vivere alle dipendenze di altri imprenditori. Qui fa la conoscenza del benestante Manik, editore del giornale "Swatantra", che lo adotta come se fosse un figlio, supportando le sue iniziative imprenditoriali. Gurukant riesce a creare un'azienda che presto diviene tra le più floride dell'India, ma il successo lo consuma trascinandolo in una spirale di illegalità e disonestà.
