Biography

Away from the studio or the stage, Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu is a man of few words. The North Australian native, blind from birth, grew up as a member of the Gumatj clan on Elcho Island, off the coast of tropical North East Arnhem Land. In his culture, the elders are the spokespersons for the clan. But the self-effacing Gurrumul, as he likes to be known, doesn’t have to say anything at ... This is some of the most beautiful music I have ever heard. Written in an Aboriginal language, the songs give the listener an incredible feeling of peace. I recommend that you buy the CD, rather than downloading it from iTunes, because the lyrics can be read in the English translation.Gurrumul

I first heard this artist when he contributed to Gary Barlow's Jubilee song and I resolved to hear more. I purchased his album 'Rrakala' and was enchanted by it so ordered 'Gurrumul' which I find extraordinarily beautiful. He sings in the Australian language but a translation booklet comes with the CD so you can read the words in English as you listen. The quality of Gurrumul's voice is so beautiful that it can move you but it is also very relaxing and, I find, therapeutic.

hauntingly beautiful. 25 Oct 2010
By michaelmouse1 - Published on Amazon.com

Geoffrey Gurrumul's unique and hauntingly beautiful voice takes us to a place we've never been before. Like Antony Heggarty did with his album 'I am a Bird Now' , Gurrumul shows us with his work that there are still places the human spirit has yet to explore and he gently takes our hands as he leads us there. This is a trip of such wonder and emotion you may want to stay a while.

Gurrumul 13 Aug 2010
By peach - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Given this as a gift from a friend in Australia, I'd never heard of Geoffrey Gurrumul. I had to look on a map to discover his hometown, and he sings in an unfamiliar language. His songs and voice are incredibly compelling and repeat listening only makes the songs more dear. Soothing and beautiful.

Very fine, very fine 24 April 2012

I'll give it five just on purity of heart and authentic sound, but otherwise it would be a four. There are a number of fantastic songs, and the others feel very repetitious and undistinguished. The writing of the songs is a little boring at times and dated, and on the first listen i found it a little weepy. It certainly can capture the sadness of the Aborigine people if you want it to. On the second listen, I really appreciated what I was hearing, found it refreshing. The CD does come with the lyrics and their english translations, and i find them to be very rich in depth and feeling. My wife and I are glad to have a copy.

Heavenly songs! 21 Aug 2011
By Chris Pots - Published on Amazon.com

This is the best collection of songs I have heard in years. And what a unique voice - close your eyes and you could be in Heaven. I really love the changes and shifts in language in the lyrics, from indigenous aboriginal to English. Melancholic yet happy too, I could listen to it all day.

A blind talent 15 Jun 2010
By Tony - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Gurrumul was born blind in his native Australia, and yet that doesn't stop him from sounding absolutely beautiful on this album. He is a singer and songwriter, but it's not like anything I've ever heard before because he sings in his native language, much like Sigur Ros does.
