An unexpected Gem. 1 Nov 2011
I love anime/manga, not all of it mind you but I have seen/read plenty of series that I found to be entertaining and occasionally fantastic. Gurren Lagann is one of those fantastic series.
I usually dislike mecha based anime, finding the whole robot battle concept sort of dull and the characters often reminding me of the power rangers. BUT, Gurren Lagann blew that out of the water.

It is consistantly entertaining, the characters are great, the animation is colourful and smooth. The battles aren't dragged out over 10 long winded episodes like several popular series I could name, but instead get on with the action while being different and sometimes funny.
Speaking of funny, the series for the most part has plenty of humour while keeping up a serious story with lots of great emotional twists.

If you like anime, comedy, flashy battles and memorable characters then buy this, you won't be dissapointed.
Hell, I can't get the words "Who the hell do you think I am!?" out of my mind.
9.5/10

I seem to recall being haunted by this title on many a trip to the local high street in search of more anime. The closest comparisons I have in mind within my own collection would place Gurren Lagann alongside Evangelion and Gunbuster, both for following the mecha theme, and the latter also for the common link as another title from the legendary Gainax studios. Yet it's also fair to say that it somehow manages to stand alone.

In my opinion it is worth a blind purchase - this is pretty much what I resorted to in deciding to get it. It carries something of that noble quality which Gunbuster wears so well. Starting as a side-splittingly silly slice of entertainment, I will say don't let the change of tone put you off (you'll feel it when it happens). Persevere with it and you will be treated to something which grows and evolves out of all proportion!

Very good anime! 16 July 2011
Gurren Laggan is a series that always interested me way back when it was origionally released in seperate volumes... but the price always put me off. So I never ended up buying it... until now. This is the complete collection all thrown into one reasonably priced set. GREAT!

Anyways Gurren Lagann is pretty fantastic series. Its a sci-fi/ mecha series with a little romance here and there so if those genres are up your ally then this may be for you.

For the most part Gurren Laggan is great fun to watch. It has an iteresting cast of characters and a story that blends some awesome action and just above average humor. The show is very easy on the eyes with smooth flowing animation and nice looking character designs with some crazy looking mechs thrown in for good measure.

Ok, so why only 4 stars... well this is very much a series of two halves (i wont spoil anything so dont worry)
In my opinion the first half of the series sets the bar very high and in alot of ways dwarfs the second half.

You see the first half of the series is very much focused on having fun and has a very light hearted almost welcoming feel to it. It has the odd dark moment as the second half of the series approaches but for the most part its just great fun.

Once the second half starts, it takes on a much darker tone. And it begins to lose that vibrant feel it once had. It just feels like its... I dont know... a bit confused with as to what it wants to be. Some obvious CG gets thrown into the mix for alot of the later action scenes aswell, and in my opinion it really deosnt gel well with the rest of the animation.

It almost got the stage where the series felt depressing at certain moments and I genuinly thought they had ruined it a bit. But fortunatly the ending (the last few episodes) really pull the series back to what it does best and it truely is breathtaking to watch the climaxing action packed scenes.

At this point I could go all "deep" and say that the change in tone repreasents a humans proggression into adulthood and thus to a certain extent justifys the depressing part of the second half.... but I dont want to end like that, so i'll finish by saying... Gurren Laggan is great! If you like Mecha and action and OTT humor and a little sappy romance... then dont hesitate, give this a go.

Thanks for reading.
