Product Description

Product Description
Innocence Lost.... Henrietta barely survived a brutal attack that killed her family. "Rescued" by the Social Welfare Agency, her injuries were repaired with robotic components and she was brainwashed - lost with the memory of her family's death was almost every trace of her own humanity. Today she is an extraordinarily lethal cyborg assassin, obediently working with her handler Giuseppe to carry out her deadly tasks. Despite her conditioning and programming, Henrietta still has the heart of a young girl; she has not completely forgotten how to love. Yet the very emotion is contrary to her training and programming. Can the Gunslinger Girl survive? Can she find peace in a struggle against her very nature?

5.0 out of 5 stars different, 4 May 2004
By S. Holt "sallyrei" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
With ADV entering the fray, rivalling Tokypop's somewhat monopolising of the manga translation business, promising to stick as close to the originals as possible, Gunslinger Girl is an example that shows ADV aren't going to release the same formulaic junk we've become accustomed to.

Set in Italy - well, it makes a nice change - it tells the story of young girls trained as government assassins. They are assigned a mentor, who becomes a sort of father/brother figure. They are also part-bionic, with cyborg parts mixed into a human body and human brain - some even had real human lives before being 'adopted' by the government. Four short stories focus on the girls, showing how their mechanical existance cannot completely override their human insides.

It may sound like the usual fayre, but the stories are subtly told, almost 'quiet', so you absorb it slower. Very promising stuff.

3.0 out of 5 stars Gunslinger Girl (Full Series Review), 17 May 2006
In modern day Italy, Gunslinger Girl, looks into the antics of the Social Welfare Agency. Their mission is to rehabilitate human lives but secretly they act as a counter terrorism and counter intelligence unit. The SWA chooses a girl in a near death condition and through a series of experiments, where her body is fitted with cybernetic parts and her memories removed, create the perfect government-commissioned assassin. These new parts and a compliance inducing drug heighten her perceptions and allow her to anticipate danger, but extensive use strains the girls mental and physical endurance shortening the girl's long-term memory, as well as her life span.

A male agent is assigned to the girl as a handler. The 'Fratello' trains, conditions and develops the girl. Each girl is treated individually but the end result is a deadly assassin with undying loyalty to their handler. The Gunslinger story focuses mainly on the relationships between the girls and the handlers, the parody between child and assassin makes for interesting personal and emotional conflicts. Fans of the series describe it as a controversial and emotionally depressing story that takes a deep look at human nature, and even though the girls have no past memories, the girls still have a soul and humanity.

The manga published in English is currently composed of ?three?(17/06/06) volumes although it is unknown whether or not they will continue to translate the series. The corresponding amine is currently doing very well and I would recommend starting there. But, these volumes would, if the future of the series was secure, make for an interesting read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Subtly suprising, 4 Sep 2004
This is an excellent book. The story is about how the government is able to genetically modify children (kind of robotic) and enable them to forget their sordid pass and become modified assassins. That probably doesnt make much sense, but you have to read to really understand. The book progresses through the lives of various girls, the hardships of being assasins, having no past and the individual combats with their personal trainers. I was quite hooked throughout though so far there has been no sign of any other book to this series. If want something a little different this is the book to go for.
