Product Description

First volume of the anime series. Henrietta was an innocent little girl when her entire family was massacred and she was left for dead. She was rescued by a privately-owned social welfare organization and given cybernetic components over her battered body. Brainwashed by the organization, she and four other girls now work as cold-blooded assassins, doing the dirty work for the Italian government. In this volume, the girls struggle to come to terms with the imbalances in their new conditioning. Include the episodes: 'Big Brother, Little Sister'; 'Astronomic Observation'; 'Young Boy'; 'Doll'; and 'Promise'.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful 12 Dec 2007
Format:DVD
The setting for gunslinger girl is located in Italy. Young girls with tragic lives or terminal illnesses are taken under the care of a top Italian government agency, simply because they are more suseptable to the treatment they will recieve. Their sick or damaged bodies are converted to biomechanical ones and they are trained vigorously in the art of combat. The problem is that these girls have a significantly shortened life span, and the shadows of their pasts can creep up on them.

The anime itself is beutiful. Each young girl is partenered with an older male acting as their 'big brother'. The older brother's responsiability is to raise them and to keep them in line, but each brother wants to raise his 'little sister' differently. There's love, rejections, tough-love, resent and pure friendship in the air. Each pair react differently to eachother.

Their task? To fight and sometimes enemies of the government, from criminals, the mafia to corrupted polititions. But sometimes, friendship or morals get in the way.

This anime is suited to the sympathetic kind of person - the last episode made me cry! Ever so sweet, so long as you understand the story line.

I watched the Japanese fansubbed version, so I appologise if anything I've said is inaccurate. ^_^;

5.0 out of 5 stars i was blown away 3 Feb 2006
Format:DVD
i recently bought the complete 'gunslinger girl' box of 3 dvds.
lucky for me i'm from australia & the 3 dvds have been available since last year.
order the volume one with box, it will house the other 2 dvds when you get them, & you will.
nice box, looks great next to my 'ghost in the shell' box.
i heard this was a good series, so, i lashed out & bought it.
well ... it is the most amazing show i've ever seen.
you will cry, you will laugh, & you will cheer these girls on
as they steal your heart.
make sure the tissue box is close by, this is sad & dark.
watch all 13 episodes, & if you haven't shed many a tear by the end, call the hostipal 'cause you have no heart.
get it get it get it ... turn the lights off, pour your favourite red wine,
start from episode one & thank goodness you're not one of them.
this is not a children's series at all, very heavy & darker than black.
even the theme is sad, as is the incidental music used throughout the series, reminiscent of the godfather.
i can't speak highly enough of this series.
the good news is it looks like there's another series in the works.
don't delay ... buy today !!!!
i can't wait to come back here to read the reviews.
can't wait to hear how much you love this great series.
henrietta, sweet henrietta, if jose ever goes,
i will look after you ...
watch this & you'll want to adopt her too.
then there's rico, angelica, triela, ah, you'll love them all.
i'm getting a little misty thinking of them.
i better watch the gunslinger girls again now ... goodnite.

3.0 out of 5 stars Gunslinger DVD 1 26 April 2009
By Saffron
Format:DVD
How much you like the first volume of Gunslinger Girls will depend heavily on how put off you are by what's being done to the girls. I had to watch it a second time to be desensitized enough to its implied and overt cruelty to give it a reasonably objective review. I am giving it overall positive ratings because it is a well-made series which does a very good job at establishing its characters. It can also invoke the kind of morbid fascination which makes rubbernecking (the practice of slowing down to get a good look at a roadside accident) so popular. Despite the favorable ratings, though, I cannot recommend the series. Anime is much-beloved outside of Japan for pushing the envelope on what is allowable in animation, but this series shows questionable judgment on its subject matter.

5.0 out of 5 stars Decidedly weird... 20 May 2006
By Feng
Format:DVD
...in fact weird on several levels, from the sparse music to the stacatto animation, to the characters to the whole premise, to the dialogue.... But it draws you in. It's involved, with flashbacks and flashforwards and flashsideways. At one level it's a shootem up like Nikita but with cartoon characters. At another level, the plots are good, and the characters and dialogue are actually very deep. I haven't enjoyed anything so much for a long time, even though it's a bit disturbing. See it!

1.0 out of 5 stars Like Noir, Love Gunslinger Girl 6 Jun 2006
Format:DVD
I've only seen this volume but already I'm intrigued and want more. It seems like the animators and script writers have really thrown in a lot of love and dedication into this series and it shows. Not only in the character designs, scrupulous attention to little details like their weapons, and flowing animation, but in the gently weaving of the storyline interlapping and backtracking to give a full picture of the lives these girls and their 'brothers' lead through their work.

If you liked Noir you'll love this. I just hope that the rest of the series gives as good.
