I got the box set of Gunslinger Girl after having read the manga, which I loved. I sat down to watch the DVDs with high expectations. I was not disappointed. The general story is pretty similar to the manga, but there are differences in the way that certain scenes and events are portrayed. This meant that although I already knew the story, there were still a few surprises that kept me on the edge of my seat.
The animation is beautifully done, every character is lovingly drawn with care. The picture is crisp, clean and the colours used are easy on the eyes. My only complaint would be that at times the characters can look very similar; Claes and Angelica in particular. However, once you get used to it, the problem dissipates.
The sound did annoy me a little. The DVD automatically played all the episodes in the English dub, so I don't know if the same problems apply to the Japanese version. When the characters talk, it tends to be in hushed tones which have me reaching for the remote. Even when the volume is turned up and booming out of the speakers, the voice actors don't all articulate very well and I had to on more than one occasion repeat sections several times before I understood what the character said. The problem tends to be more with the child characters, the adults spoke pretty clearly.
This was made up, however, by the beauty of the background music. True, it tended to get in the way of the conversations, but on the whole, it was written with care and always induced a response from me, from apprehension to contentment. The opening and ending theme tunes were both so good, that I am trying to put them on my iPod.
The plot was entertaining and although each episode resolved itself, several elements carried themselves forward. It is true that the final episode felt a bit ordinary and didn't really conclude the series, but I think that that was because there is a second series, not yet in English, called Gunslinger Girl: Il Teatrino, which continues the story. Also, the manga, which the anime is based on, is currently still ongoing, so if the manga did not conclude, it would be difficult for the anime to. I would say though, that the occasional flashbacks can make the story confusing, but that is mainly just in the first episode, the rest are fine.
In conclusion, the anime is stunning and my favourite out of the ones that I have seen. Yes, the sound quality isn't the best, but I still love the DVDs to bits. They will definitely be watched frequently by me and I am currently getting my family and friends to watch them. I would recommend this product to anyone and I don't care about its cons, it is simply amazing.
