Biography

RORY GALLAGHER
In the years that have passed since Rory Gallagher’s death, aged 47 on June 14 1995, his true stature has
become ever more clear. This soft spoken Irishman, characterised by his flowing locks and trademark
working man stage clothes, was far from ordinary. Gallagher was a self taught virtuoso who forged a
musical revolution in his native land, shunned the traps ... Read more in Amazon's Rory Gallagher Store

2.0 out of 5 stars Dear Oh Dear! where has all the Rory Gone! 10 July 2005
Format:Audio CD
Whoever give the go ahead to release this album must need their head or maybe ears examined.
Is this money talking ? something that Rory never cared about that much.
What a blight on the genius that was Rory Gallagher.
There is certainly nothing enhanced about this release and anyone coming to Rory G for the first time would be quickly turned off by what is probaly one of the worst Rory releases of all time.
For all the high tech jiggery pokery poured into this it falls far short of almost every other Rory release.
Agreeing with another reviewer I have to say that the remixed Tatoo'd Lady intro is apalling and pales into insignificance compared to the original.
Often Rory's guitar solos are set too far back in the mix and his power and skill are not heard for what they truly are.
As fairly hardcore Rory fan for nearly thirty years I would have to say give this one a miss, and if you want to hear the true Rory Gallagher genius purchase almost anything else by him.

I returned mine the following day, something I have done many times with other artists but never with Rory.
Shame!

2.0 out of 5 stars What a wasted opportunity ! 19 July 2005
By Mr. I. Stephen VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD
I'm glad it's not just me - I've also just sold my copy in disgust at the remastering / remeddling going on here ( I can't even really notice that there's any discernible difference between the three different options available to someone with an SACD player ) The tracks off ' Jinx ' for instance sound like they were recorded in a sock and on others, Rory sounds like he's singing in another room.

Also, I know that it's a purely personal, subjective thing but I'd say that a definitive 'best of' that might introduce the man's music to new ears is not the place to wheel out substandard live recordings /alternative versions of songs.

I'd have left the Taste stuff off altogether ( bearing in mind that an excellent compilation was issued a couple of years back ) and put in more off the first three albums. Nothing off 'Live in Europe' ? Nothing off 'Irish Tour' and precious little off the truly masterful 'Deuce' ??

In the words of the great man " What's goin' on " !!

2.0 out of 5 stars Donal has gone to far this time 8 July 2005
By jbufka2
Format:Audio CD
First of all, let me start by saying that I am a huge Rory fan and have been for thirty plus years. I have all the original CD's and all of the remastered CD's issued over the last few years. The only reason I've given this collection two stars at all is because it's Rory! The 5.1 surround mix is a joke. It pales in comparison to the recent 5.1 Elton John titles and similar SCAD's and DVD-A's where there was some actual effort put forth into really doing 5.1 right. The 5.1 mix here is hardly worth the bother and isn't any better than many of the very early Silverline 5.1 titles (I'm sure there are a few who understand what I mean by this). As far as the two channel SACD layer goes, it is overly "hot" on a number of the tracks (a few of the slower acoustic tracks sound fine however) and always sounds like it's about to clip and distort, if it isn't already. I also hate the newly mixed intro on "Tattoo Lady", my all time favorite Rory song. I haven't listened to the regular redbook CD layer yet but if it's anything like the mess this disc is in both stereo and 5.1 SACD I suspect this disc will not be played very often (another reviewer has noted the regular stereo layer seems to use a mixed down version of the horrible 5.1 tracks for the stereo CD mix as well but I can't comment on that yet). It's a darn good thing I've got all the original CD's still! Shame on you Mr. Donal Gallagher for this. This collection could've been so much better with some time, care, and proper attention paid to an artist that truly deserves it.
