Biography

UB40 have spent the last few years doing what many bands in such an exalted position would do. Having sold 50 million albums and become global superstars, they have spread their wings and diversified.

They have collaborated with Jamaica's dancehall legends and worked with the fathers of reggae. In 2003, they even recorded Swing Low, the anthem for the England rugby team's triumphant World Cup… Read more in Amazon's UB40 Store

Amongst the hardcore UB fans this probably ranks as one of their greatest albums (and the most underated), yet the album recieved little public attention and the two singles released from the album did only modestly in the charts. Don't let this put you off buying the album, it has a refreshing uplifting feel about it and some cultural lyrics in 'Guns in the ghetto' probably one of the best songs they have written. 'Always there' is another UB classic as well as 'I love it when you smile' and 'Lisa'. My fave UB album, one I never get tired of hearing. The dancehall album which followed its release features Jamaicas finest riding the riddims off this album and complements this album well.

Classic UB40 25 Jun 2001
Format:Audio CD
After a spell of only average albums UB40 are back on track with this excellent outing. The tracks still have a slightly more 'pop' feel, but they have also recaptured the earlier dub sound that made them great in the first place. For fans of the band this is kind of a cross between 'Labour of love' & 'Present arms'. Great to see them back on the reggae saddle.

Give it 3.5 stars 8 Oct 2008

Like other UB40 reviews that I have posted, I do not pretned to be an expert or authority of the band, but I do own several of their albums and at this point and I know which ones I like and respect and which ones that I could pass over. This is a keeper. Very true Reggae sound. If you have ever been to Kingston then this album will take you back there, whether you ever wanted to go back there again or not. I hate to use such hackneyed terms as "authentic" and "gritty", but that is what this album is. Not my favorite, but I am glad that I own it and it is a good listen.

A PURE REGGAE ALBUM 17 April 1999
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Fans of UB40 who brought this 1997 album expecting to hear lightweight pop grooves reminisent of their previous "Promises and lies" CD may have been surprised. "Guns in the ghetto" is a very pure reggae album that wastes no time trying to attract a pop audience. For this reason,it will probably not go on to be UB40s best remembered album, but tracks like "Always there", "I love it when you smile" and the title song make it worth buying,as do "Tell me is it true" "Oracabessa moonshine" and "lisa."
