Product Description

In the winter of 1924, Daisy Dalrymple Fletcher travels to a school friend's house to witness the estate's famous Guy Fawkes celebration. But she gets more than a quiet weekend at the quaint family manse that she was originally hoping for. The home is the site of some severe family tension - the Viscount and head of family is a strict and unyielding sort, insisting that everyone - especially his children - meet his own unreasonable expectations. On the evening of the Guy Fawkes celebration, the Viscount is found dead on the floor of his study, killed by his own hand. What's more, he apparently first killed a guest - a married woman visiting England from Australia - before turning the gun on himself. Now it's up to Alec Fletcher, Daisy's husband and a DCI of Scotland Yard, to unravel the mystery and the long held family secrets that led to this state of affairs before anyone else can fall prey to the tragic cycle of events - a solution that will require, perhaps, more than a little help from Daisy herself.

5.0 out of 5 stars a writer who never lets you down, 3 May 2007

When you read a Daisy Dalrymple mystery you know you are in for a treat and although best read before a cozy fire on a winter's night she can be just as much fun on the beach or on the plane. This latest outing finds our intrepid heroine heavy with child being invited to a traditional November the 5th celebration in a great Old House in the country. It has all the ingredients required, enough suspects to fill the dusty hallways and enough clues to fill those echoing stairways. The plot may have a couple of creaks in it but the sheer fun of reading the book soon silences those. Just read it and enjoy a few hours in another less complex time

4.0 out of 5 stars Another gem, 13 Feb 2011

The Daisy Dalrymple series by Carola Dunn are all an absolute joy. Admittedly, they are somewhat formulaic BUT if you accept that and enjoy them for what they are, then you will experience a delightful story, with wise human insight, and a happy ending. They are absolutely charming books that allow the reader a couple of hours escapism, and I recommend them highly for that alone. This book is no different - nicely written, evoking beautifully 1920's/30's England with the sweet Daisy finding herself entangled once again in a murder case. If you want a challenging read that will broaden your horizons and expand your thinking this book is not for you. If you'd like a couple of peaceful hours on a train, a plane, or curled up on the sofa then do buy this book and enjoy.

This is the first "Daisy Dalrymple" story I have ever read and it will certainly be the last. Appalling. Infantile rubbish!
Another reviewer said it better than me: I could not put this book down; I had to hurl it from me with great force.
