As usual Carola Dunn has produced another charming, well written detective story. I love her 1920's settings, especially the way in which the aftermath of the Great War is shown to have affected the characters everyday lives.
In this tale Daisy is invited to an old schoolfriend's family home so that she can write an article about their annual Guy Fawkes celebration.
It becomes immediately obvious that there are tensions within the family, mostly connected with the irascible father (very much Lord of the Manor). Dear old Dad wants his son to manage the family estates, however Jack wants to be an aviation engineer. Whereas Babs is a fantastic farmer and actually wants to run the estate, obviously being a mere women this is totally impossible. To add insult to injury the youngest daughter appears to be romantically involved with a member of the middle classes!
It is therefore no surprise when the old man is murdered undercover of the firework explosions. What does puzzle everyone, including Alec, Daisy's husband, is why a recently arrived Australian visitor should also be killed.
Light touches are added by the coy references to Daisy's pregnancy - she is constantly hungry and needs the loo, although this can't be mentioned in polite company. I also enjoyed the rivalry between the Lord Lieutenant of the county and the Chief Constable of the neighbouring county.
I've now read all the Daisy D. novels plus the Dandy Gilver books by Catriona McPherson, what do I read now to get my 1920's detective novel fix?
