Book Description

The 15th novel in the charming Daisy Dalrymple series of 1920's country house murder mysteries.

Product Description

Fatal Fireworks on Guy Fawkes Night... Daisy Darlymple is delighted to accept an invitation from her old school friend. Gwen Tyndall lives at Edge Manor in the Cotswolds and Daisy's visit will coincide with their annual fireworks display on 5th November. But this year, amid the festivities, Gwen's father and another man are found dead. It would appear that Sir Harold turned the gun on himself after shooting his guest. But could this apparent suicide be murder? After all, Sir Harold was notoriously bad tempered and there was no love lost between him and his children. And when Daisy and her husband uncover an explosive family secret , it soon becomes clear that a trigger-happy killer will go to any length to keep it hidden... Praise for the Daisy Dalrymple series: 'Cunning... appropriate historical detail and witty dialogue are the finishing touches on this engaging 1920s period piece.' - Publishers Weekly 'As always, Dunn evokes the life and times of 1920s England while providing a plot that is a cut above the average British cosy. This will delight readers who love country-house mysteries.' - Booklist 'For fans of Dorothy L. Sayers' novels' - Library Journal

Pure Relaxing Reading 28 Oct 2011
Format:Paperback
Yet another 1920's period 'Daisy Dalrymple' mystery from 'Carola Dunn'.
I have tried to read this series of books in order, and it is
worth the effort, as it takes you from just after the WW1 into
the life of the 'upper classes' and the Honorable Daisy who needs
to escape from its confines and pursue her passion for journalism (with
quite a lot of murder and mayhem included).
As the title indicates (Gunpowder Plot)the mystery revolves around a murder at a manor house on the 5th November.
These are the sort of books to relax with; they are interesting and easy to read and all set in a world that only the privileged enjoyed. Good plots which mainly take place in country-house settings.
Well worth a read.

charming 29 Aug 2011

As usual Carola Dunn has produced another charming, well written detective story. I love her 1920's settings, especially the way in which the aftermath of the Great War is shown to have affected the characters everyday lives.
In this tale Daisy is invited to an old schoolfriend's family home so that she can write an article about their annual Guy Fawkes celebration.
It becomes immediately obvious that there are tensions within the family, mostly connected with the irascible father (very much Lord of the Manor). Dear old Dad wants his son to manage the family estates, however Jack wants to be an aviation engineer. Whereas Babs is a fantastic farmer and actually wants to run the estate, obviously being a mere women this is totally impossible. To add insult to injury the youngest daughter appears to be romantically involved with a member of the middle classes!
It is therefore no surprise when the old man is murdered undercover of the firework explosions. What does puzzle everyone, including Alec, Daisy's husband, is why a recently arrived Australian visitor should also be killed.
Light touches are added by the coy references to Daisy's pregnancy - she is constantly hungry and needs the loo, although this can't be mentioned in polite company. I also enjoyed the rivalry between the Lord Lieutenant of the county and the Chief Constable of the neighbouring county.
I've now read all the Daisy D. novels plus the Dandy Gilver books by Catriona McPherson, what do I read now to get my 1920's detective novel fix?

Daisy has been invited to a fireworks celebration because she is writing an article about the centuries old tradition of fireworks parties at Edge Manor. Her old school-friend, Gwen Tyndall lives there with her parents and her brother and sister. Unfortunately two deaths take place at the Manor on the night of the party and once again Daisy is involved in a murder investigation. Naturally her husband, Scotland Yard detective Alec Fisher is called in to track down the murderer.

The plot is complicated enough to keep most people guessing almost to the end and there are plenty of suspects with means motive and opportunity to commit the double murder. There are plenty of ongoing disagreements between family members which add spice to the story. I loved the description of the party and found most of the characters sympathetic. I thought the argumentative Lord Lieutenant was well done too. Alec's colleagues are interesting and well drawn especially the way the react to Daisy's theories.

If you have not tried this series before then this might be a good one to start with as it is fast moving and interesting and you don't need to know any of the back story to appreciate the relationships between the characters. The book is well written and brings the era - the nineteen twenties - to life. The series commenced with Death at Wentwater Court (Daisy Dalrymple Mystery 1)
