Product Description

Review

The value of many Grub Street books is that they relate the personal experiences of airmen who survived the war, as in the case of Wallace McIntosh, a man of humble background, who cheated death many times. McIntosh's war, as told in Gunning for the Enemy, must remain one of the most vivid memoirs of any who manned the rotating turrent searching for the "blurred movement of an approaching enemy fighter, intent on blowing them to pieces". --The Oxford Times

Product Description

When the Bank of Scotland carried out a recent survey asking people to name Great Scots, 'Wallace McIntosh - War Hero' was chosen amongst such illustrious names as John Logie Baird, David Livingstone and Robert Louis Stevenson. Born into grinding poverty and brought up in awful circumstances by his grandparents he managed to join the RAF to escape the constant struggle to survive. Only by a fluke was he trained as an air gunner, then to fly over fifty missions, shooting down eight enemy aircraft - an amazing and unique feat - including three in one night. Merely staying alive was an incredible challenge and he had many hairy incidents, all related here in his moving and uplifting story. Wallace was a remarkable and unforgettable character who overcame all the appalling odds, creating hope from nothing to become the most decorated air gunner ever.

Well worth reading 4 May 2009
Format:Paperback
An interesting autobiography starting from a very poor farm labourer's background to become a top scoring bomber air gunner. The early years of hardship make a fascinating social commentary of life before the war. As an air enthusiast I would have liked a little more detail of the air battles, but it is still interesting to hear the gunner's story for a change.
