This third volume of the wonderful webcomic "Gunnerkrigg Court" finds the story taking a dark turn. Annie and Kat continue their journey into the Court's history, making new friends and learning much about the Court and Forest. The book jumps in feet-first, immediately whisking the reader off to a seemingly simple, humorous Dr. Disaster story, instead leading to clear plot and character developments. From there, the story does not relent, reminding readers that author and artist Tom Siddell is in full control of his comic.
In "Reason", we see our girls growing up. The book starts in the middle of their second year and gradually progresses through to the end. It's through this we see Annie attempting to set aside her shy, somewhat cold persona in an attempt to better socialize (and provide Kat with equal socializing opportunities). We are reintroduced to familiar side characters, watching them grow from mere background cutouts to flesh and blood characters. Favorites return for new adventures as we join Annie in her quests to better understand the Court and its increasingly sketchy history.
In this volume, we see the start of a separation between Annie and Kat, as marked by their respective abilities. Annie learns more about her etheric abilities, developing them from the mere ability to summon a blinker stone through using her stone for trickery, and even applying her etheric abilities in the real world. Her lessons are not limited, though, simply to knowledge of the etheric - Annie learns about friendship, love and even about her own personal heritage. Kat, meanwhile, progresses in the field of robotics and technology. Ever tech-savvy, she continues in her struggle to build Robot the perfect body. Through these challenges, she must face the truth about the Court robots and the history of her home, as well as her own understanding of technology, friendship and responsibility.
Though "Reason" contains relatively few chapters (particularly as their are two chapters that are, in fact, one story arc), it carries a lot of weight, both in terms of the revelations within its pages, as well as the clear character developments. Zimmy, Gamma, Eglamore, Jack, Parley, Smitty, Janet, Winsbury, Paz and the rest get more screen time, shifting the focus from simply our two heroines and broadening the reader's view of the Court.
Siddell's art and writing remain top-notch, ever improving as the story grows more and more complex. "Gunnerkrigg Court" is a brilliantly written story and "Reason" is no exception, taking the story through darker turns and showing the characters come out ever stronger. Any fan of Gunnerkrigg Court online will no doubt want to own this beautiful hardcover. Bonuses include a few pages of lovely sketches that demonstrate some of Siddell's drawing prowess and approach. Those who haven't read this wonderful comic should certainly get onboard.
Highly recommended, as always.
