Following on from 'Cockpit: An Illustrated History of World War II Aircraft Interiors' by the same authors, 'Gunner' lets you see those parts of WWII aeroplanes that seldom appear anywhere else, either in words or pictures. The book gives a vivid impression of the job of the gunners who occupied freezing gun positions to battle tiredness, slipstream forces, high target speeds, darkness and danger to protect their aircraft and crews.

Dan Pattersons's colour photographs are excellent and some very rare aircraft are depicted, and alongside are many contemporary photographs and cutaway drawings that this reader has never seen before.

The text is interesting but a little too brief, although with more words I guess there would have been fewer photos, so overall its a good balance. There are some annoying grammatical errors here and there but the only real howler is a table of 'Crew Position Survivability' that simply doesn't add up.

If the title has attracted you then the content will not disappoint, despite the high price.
