Product Description

From the Back Cover

Two legendary gunmen meet for the first time in a small, Southwestern town. Despite their celebrated past, both men have been struggling to survive. Now their mere presence in the small town makes the townspeople speculate on teh result of the gunfight between them. But Abe abd Will don't want to "kill or be killed" for the amusement of gambling spectators, until they realise that one of them could benefit from such an event. They decide to stage a real gunfight and sell tickets. It will be winner-take-all. Despite a deep friendship which has developed, neither can turn back, as each has plans that only money can buy. Therefore one man must die...

I saw this movie on TV back in 1978, and though I have never seen it again, it made a deep impression. Its originality, in addition to being just about born a die-hard fan of Johnny Cash, made it a must-see.

Johnny Cash makes one of his very few real performances with more than historical interest. Both men get themselves involved in a bet-on gunfight. They decide to meet on the local arena like wild-west gladiators. However, a special friendship starts growing between two rivals set up to kill each other. The end of the story leaves us thoughtful.

Why this movie has been so much overlooked is a mystery to me.

Death Without the Glory. 19 April 2009
By Bob Salter TOP 50 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:DVD
This is one of those strange haunting films that you remember for a very long time. It stars Kirk Douglas and Johnny Cash as two famous gunfighters who meet in a little town. Douglas the more extrovert of the two is living quietly in retirement with his young son and wife. Not a life he is happy with. Cash breezes into town and the two become friends. Both are out of luck and out of money. Douglas eventually persudes Cash to participate in a gunfight staged in a bullring in Mexico. The winner will take all the proceeds from the tickets sold to the event. It is pretty desperate stuff but then they are desperate men. The gunfight itself is very low key and unromanticised. It lasts a matter of seconds and then there is an appalled silence.

It is a very disturbing film and there is a strange extended fantasy sequence when the widow of the dead gunfighter imagines what might have been if her husband had won. It is also odd in that it was financed by the Jicarilla Apache tribe. As you may have guessed this is not your average Western. There is a lot of interplay between the stars and little in the way of action. Life on a listless border town is honestly portrayed. The ending is a little predictable but is shocking none the less. The rection of the expectant crowd tells you everything. This is not a Roman arena. Death holds no glory in this finale, a stark fact that is forced home dramatically and gives us pause for thought.

Cash is fine in the strong and silent role, his obvious lack of acting ability less exposed in this part, whilst Douglas is given greater freedom to express his ability in his role. It is certainly a downbeat film and is also quite offbeat in its portrayal of the West. It is a low budget film and this shows at times but despite this it still makes for compelling viewing.
