Product Description

It's a simple enough job for a very dangerous man - go to the Leam Lane estate, pick up a converted air pistol from a guy called Florida Al, bring it back in one piece. But Richie - fresh out of the YOI and about to be a dad - has just lost the gun to a bunch of young thugs. And Goose isn't the kind of bloke who gives second chances ...

GUN - previously published by Crime Express, now an e-dition with a brand new introduction by Martyn Waites.

Praise for RAY BANKS:

"Banks is one of the freshest voices in hard-boiled crime fiction today." - Library Journal

"Ray Banks writes with harshness, humour and elegance, and his punchy dialogue teems with vigorous authenticity." - The Times

"Banks has an ear for the vernacular as sharp as, but a shade or two bluer than, that of George V. Higgins. Let the squeamish stick with Tony Soprano; this is the real tough stuff." - Kirkus

"Quick, sharp and emotionally raw, reading Banks is like a dinner of blowfish with a sociopathic chef serving up a slice of death on a plate. One bad cut and it could all go wrong, but when it's served with skill, it's an adrenaline rush." _ Crimespree Magazine

"Lots of neo-noir's young tyros can punch -- and Banks can punch as hard as the best of them -- but he also has the heart and soul to back it up." - January Magazine

"For those bored with the traditional approach of crime and mystery series - who know that there is more to be found in the big, bad world of crime fiction - Banks is the man. His books are smart, unpredictable and, above all, dangerous." - Crime Scene Scotland

"For my money one of the top crime writers currently operating in Britain." - Martyn Waites

5.0 out of 5 stars Gritty realism from a great writer 19 Dec 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I like to discover new authors with as few preconceptions as possible. I don't read up on them. I don't read reviews. I just dive into the icy waters of a new writers imagination. However, everyone I know in the crime writing fraternity, which I am new to, raves about Ray Banks. Still I bided my time and read his novella Gun when I was good and ready.

On the face of it the plot was a simple one. A guy just out of prison wants earn some cash without the drudgery of the 9 to 5. Who can blame him eh? He runs an errand for a dodgy character that he feels owes him a favour. Things pretty much go downhill for Richie from there on in.

The dialogue throughout the story is absolutely spot on. It is never overdone nor underdone. I have discovered a great secret. The most powerful adhesive in the world: Ray Banks. Try as I might I could not put down my kindle. It was stuck fast to my hand. I was absolutely captivated. Gun had realism, grit, wit, violence and given the tone of the story, surprisingly also hope. Yes my crime writing friends Banks the master has sucked in another one.

5.0 out of 5 stars A real gem, well worth the money 1 Nov 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is the first Ray Banks novella that I've read - there are short stories across the web, but it's only now I've taken a look at something more substantial. And what a great read - this story of one man's attempts to get his gun back is a real knock-out. It moves along effortlessly, each action naturally leading onto the next. And yet despite this, Banks doesn't sacrifice character - everyone featured here is fully three dimensional, and they talk and act in a believable way. And, perhaps most hearteningly, Banks doesn't cop out with the ending, which is both satisfying and open-ended. Not an easy trick to pull off.

I'm now looking forward to reading a lot more of his work. If you too are a Ray Banks virgin, this is a great way to pop your cherry.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bitter-sweet Brit Grit 9 May 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Richie is fresh out of the slammer and he needs a job.So, he heads off to see Goose - a psychotic ex- squaddie that he's worked for before with disastrous results - and Goose sends Richie to get a gun.

This is a short and bitter-sweet novella which showcases everything that is brilliant about Ray Banks' writing. Great, realistic characters; gritty dialogue; razor sharp humour; emotional punch. Gun has got the lot.

Short and perfectly formed, Gun is a perfect introduction to the truly splendid world of Ray Banks- a writer who combines a strong sense of place and a powerful individual voice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another good read 2 Dec 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Having read California by Ray Banks I decided to buy more of his work. This was another great read! Banks' clearly has the talent to write creatively without resorting to formulas or 'franchises' and this was a very different book to the first one I read. Excellent. Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Road To Nowhere 5 Nov 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
A minor ex con who's just come out of prison runs an errand for a bigger and wiser criminal but the risks are far greater than he could ever have imagined. By the time he's realised his mistake it's all too late. This is the first story I have read by this author but it definitely won't be the last. It was easy to read, engaging and stylish. Ray Banks takes us on a slow painful tour of run down estates and grim pubs, creating a tense and spiralling atmosphere in only eighty pages. You can almost smell the stale beer and cigarettes coming through the kindle pages. For me this is another author to add to my book wish list, for you it's a great story waiting to be read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure dead brilliant 11 Oct 2011
By McDroll
Format:Kindle Edition
This is just a fabulous wee story about the boys that you see wandering around any high street in the UK and the trouble they can get themself wrapped up in.

The dialogue is superb and Banks shows he has a well tuned ear for how real folk talk and I greatly enjoyed the realistic patter. The story is just so typically noir; it goes from bad to worse and then really, really bad for our poor wee hero Richie, who's just out from the jail and goes straight back into the same social network of small time criminals that got him banged up in the first place. He's actually quite a nice guy and he'd much rather, I'm sure, be with his girlfriend Becka and mooch around the shops on a Saturday afternoon but he's got no dosh....and as he says, ' He couldn't make money and look for a job at the same time.'

Richie gets teamed up with Goose again, the guy who gave him the job that landed Richie in prison, but this time it's not a bit of GBH he wants Richie to do but he asks him to venture into enemy territory to buy a gun off another gadgie called Florida Al.

Great characters, tight plot and wonderful dialogue. This Ray Banks is pretty good you know..... Don't miss out on this little gem.

5.0 out of 5 stars Real, honest, and engaging. 27 July 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Ray Banks' Gun is set in very recognisable real-world territory for me and tells the story of Richie, fresh out of prison and sent to pick up a gun for a man you don't want to upset, from another man you don't want to upset either. Or sit next to. Richie starts to have second thoughts about returning to the life, but it's all too late, the job goes terribly wrong, and his attempt to fix it makes it go from bad to worse.

There's not a wasted paragraph in Gun, it's told with great economy and Richie's voice is consistent and engaging throughout. There's some really well-drawn and interesting characters, and when Richie's job all breaks down into inevitable chaos and violence it's sudden, and shocking, and real.

This to me is much more vital British crime fiction than most novels of Detective {NAME} with sidekick {NAME2} set in {CITY} tracking down {SERIAL KILLER} and never failing to visit {SCENIC SPOTS OF CITY}. Stories like Gun are far more real - and honest - and capture a slice of what life in Britain is like for many people. It's classic Banks territory, people trying to make their way the best they can when the odds are stacked against them, and the chances are they will find a way to mess it all up regardless. But you read on, because the voice and Richie's struggle are so engaging, you have to see whether he makes it.
