Funky Ya Ya From The Vaults 13 April 2006
By soulcargo - Published on
Format: Audio CD
This collection, along with the 1st Gumbo Stew disc, unearths some vintage Crescent City R&B / Soul from the AFO archives. The real treasures here are the unreleased track from the mystical Prince La La and The AFO Executives theme "WYLD" (which was named for New Orleans'legendary black AM radio station. Every cut here is wonderful(Even if you're sick of Ya Ya - it sounds great in context on the disc). The bulk is early - mid 60s, but the Tami Lynn / Alvin "Shine" Robinson stuff is from late 60's Los Angeles sessions with Dr. John and is "smokin'". Even Tami Lynn's cover of "Light My Fire" has a sultry seductiveness (she is such an underrated singer). For fans of N.O. funk, this and the first volume are highly recommended

all 3 volumes are consistently good 2 Aug. 2013

this is the realm of the funky bar room novelty record singer looking for a hit. Heavy on the carib-like Junkanoo rhythm, I doubt these second string singles ever saw the inside of many jukeboxes even 50 miles out from the pressing plant. They came, they wailed, they were mostly forgotten.

Ace has cherry picked the best of the doomed but influencial AFO label. Early Dr John is the stand out.
