The first time I saw this movie I really enjoyed it, and now I have my own copy to keep on enjoying it.
There are two main reasons why I like it, firstly I like fast cars, and movies about them.
This illegal race from New York to Longbeach provides the setting for some great road racing. The build up to the start of the race provides suitable background for the characters in the film. And the rules, "There are no rules".
The early morning race start, with the sound of high performance engines reverberating around New York City is just great.
There is a good range of performance cars, and some good footage of them on the roads accross America.
The film wouldn't be complete without an official presence, and the poor policeman who really wants to get these guys, just can't seem to get the right things together at the right time.
The other main reason I like the film is the message it portrays about the "wisdom?" of the blanket 55mph speed limit that had been imposed in the States at the time.

In summary, a great fun car race film.

Gumball 3 May 2009
Format:DVD
The Gumball Rally is by no means the first road trip movie, but it is one of the best. Based around an illegal road race from New York to Los Angeles it features classic cars and comical situations. Unlike it's more famous later contemporary, The Cannonball Run, it doesn't feature well known actors and actresses, but concentrates more on the race. The plot line is far better than Cannonball and doesn't involve gags written for specific roles (the embarrassing pseudo James Bond/Roger Moore plot comes to mind). The main race is between to long time pals who have grown up forever competeing with each other and also serves as a old versus new tale. One team is racing old style in an AC Cobra with the only back up being gas stations and their own mettle, the other team is a rich enthusiast who hires the leading Italian Ferrari driver and most of his team. The other race teams get up to all sorts of hi jinks, but all are pitted against the long serving down trodden cop, Roscoe, who is trying to stop the main racers any way he can. The film is a joy from begining to end and is a nostalgic trip back to 1970's USA and non political corectness, with one thing on everyone's mind. THere is no substitution for the internal combustion engine. Long Live the V8 and gasolene!

Forget Smokey and the Bandit this is definately the best race movie around starring Michael Sarazin who is lucky enough to get the keys for the AC Cobra instead of the Ferrari Daytona.

Very much a comedy in the Smokey and the Bandit guise but more action and far better car chases that sees them racing from downtown New York to the dockside opposite the Queen Mary.

Its so long since ive seen the movie that i cannot remember most of it but the race between Daytona and Cobra was particularly memrobable.

If you have not seen the movie thats not surprising because it has not been televised for atleast six years maybe more,so much so that the only characters i know who were in the movie was Michael Sarazin and Rual Julia

Its a great chase film and wellworth watching, now that it is on dvd.
