Book Description

2 May 2011 Mr Gum (Book 4)

Shabba me whiskers! It’s one of those Mr Gum books by Andy Stanton. They’re only the craziest, funnest most amazing books for children in the world.

Mr Gum and the Power Crystals Can it really be true that there’s an ancient curse on the town of Lamonic Bibber? And you guessed it, that old roo-de-lally Mr Gum and his trusty sidekick Billy William the Third have something to do with it. But . . . our favourite heroes Polly and Friday and the gingerbread biscuit Alan Taylor (only 15.24 cm tall) are determined to save the town (sigh of relief).

Hang on to your heads and prepare to chuckle like a chipmunk as you’re whisked to the land of talking dogs, silly songs, Old Granny, and the best chase scene you’ve ever seen.

Mr Gum and the Power Crystals is the fourth book in the internationally best-selling series by Andy Stanton, which has won everything from the Blue Peter Book Award (twice) the Roald Dahl Funny Prize and the Red House Children’s Book Award.

Praise for Mr Gum:

‘Smooky palooki! This book is well brilliant!’ – Jeremy Strong

‘Worryingly splendid’ – Guardian NOT FOR BORERS!

More About the Author

Andy Stanton lives in North London and writes funny books for kids. He's best known for his 'Mr Gum' series, of which there are currently nine titles: 'You're A Bad Man, Mr Gum!'; 'Mr Gum and the Biscuit Billionaire'; and some others he can't be bothered to tell you about at the moment. Check them out on Amazon though, they're all there.

'You're A Bad Man, Mr Gum!' was the overall winner of the 2007 Red House Children's Book Award. That's really good, you get to hang on to a big trophy for a year, just like Wimbledon. They engrave your name on it and everything. That means Andy Stanton's name is near the names of some amazing previous winners, including J.K. Rowling, Jacqueline Wilson, Roald Dahl, just all sorts of quality people.

'Mr Gum and the Biscuit Billionaire' was shortlisted for the Guardian children's Book Award but was beaten by Jenny Valentine's brilliant 'Finding Violet Park'. You should check that out too.

Andy's won some other awards, including a couple of Blue Peter awards for Best Book With Pictures; and in 2008, he won the inaugural Roald Dahl Funny Prize with 'Mr Gum and the Dancing Bear'. That's a good one, it really is.

In 2012 Kate Winslet recorded the first four 'Mr Gum' titles for audiobook versions. That's good, isn't it? Kate Winslet!

Aside from 'Mr Gum' Andy has also written 'The Story of Matthew Buzzington' and 'Sterling and the Canary'; not to mention a disgraceful picture book called 'Here Comes The Poo Bus!' It's a horror.

Acclaim:

'Funny? You bet, and the humour is not of the willy, poo, bum variety. Here sad squirrels blow their noses on passing butterflies, people speak funty - sorry funny... Worryingly splendid.'
Philip Ardagh, Guardian

'This is a riot'
Danny Baker, BBC London

'Andy Stanton accumulates silliness and jokes in an irresistible, laughter-inducing romp' Sunday Times Children's Book of the Week

'A delightfully grim adventure' Radio Times

'raucous, revoltingly rambunctious and nose-snortingly funny'
Daily Mail

'...wonderful and whimsical nonsense...' Sunday Express

'The Mr Gum books should be compulsory consumption for every primary school child' Junior Education

'It provoked long and painful belly laughs from my daughter, who is eight, and gave her an idea of how unruly and mischievous literature can be' Daily Telegraph

Product Description

Review

"'A wickedly entertaining story'; The Sunday Times said: 'Andy Stanton accumulates silliness and jokes in an irresistible, laughter-inducing romp'; Philip Ardagh for the Guardian said: 'Worryingly splendid.' - Equally, Mr Gum and the Biscuit Billionaire was the talk of the town: 'A riotous read' said the Sunday Express; 'Designed to tickle young funny bones' - Glasgow Herald; 'Cranks up children's storytelling conventions to hilarious extremes' - Jewish Chronicle."

About the Author

Andy Stanton Andy Stanton lives in North London. He studied English at Oxford but they kicked him out. He has been a stand-up comedian, a film script reader, a cartoonist, an NHS lackey and lots of other things. He has many interests, but best of all he likes Radio 4, books and music (even jazz). One day he’d like to live in New York or Berlin or one of those places because he’s got fantasies of bohemia. His favourite expression is ‘Good evening’ and his favourite word is ‘captain’.

2.0 out of 5 stars bring back andy stanton reading his own books! 28 Oct 2012
By Charlie
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Let me explain - I loved this book and all of andy stantons mr gums. But why oh why did those stripey rascals at the BBC audio replace the hilarious author with kate winslet, who is screechy, actressy and not what this book needs. Andy stanton reading his own books had hilarious natural comic timing, which was naturalistic and appealing to kids and adults. Not even the kids loved this cd as much as the first 3. BRING BACK ANDY STANTON, his funny songs, sound effects and terrible accents. This family misses him a lot. Buy the book though!

5.0 out of 5 stars recommended for reluctant readers 17 July 2010
By Cops
Format:Paperback
My 9yr old hated reading until we discovered Mr Gum.... Now he ask's if we can read!
This was the 1st one we read (in just a few days, reading a page each) and then we bought the rest in order of publication. I had finally found some books which caught his imagination and weren't a chore.
They are a joy to read because they are funny, my son often cried with laughter. Some books are better than others, but all are good.
2 years on and we are still reading them and buying as each one is published. He is really a bit too old for these now, but they are still funny and still enjoyable.
I can also recommend the 'Hiccup & Toothless' books about a Viking and his dragon by Cressida Cowell. 'Franny k Stein' about a young scientist and her mad inventions.
For older boys, the 'Wimpy kid' books are enjoyed, but not so much by me!

My son was behind a couple of years behind in his reading, but having finally found some books he truly liked and looked forward to reading, he caught up in just 9 mths! It was all about finding the right books for him. In his case, it was humour that appealed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cool book! - opinion of an 8 year old! 6 May 2008
Format:Paperback
This is a funny book. I am an 8 year old girl and I really enjoyed this. I have got the rest of the books and am reading Mr Gum and the Goblins at the moment. I would recommend this book to all capable readers both girls and boys as it is intriguing and makes you want to keep reading.

2.0 out of 5 stars voice is not right 20 Feb 2013
By Mag
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
should have taken heed of others's comments. Loved the two previous aduio books with Andy Stanton (Biscuit Billionaire and Mr Gum and the Goblins) but Kate Winslett's voice of Polly was just wrong and neither of my kids wanted to listen to it even though they were stuck in the car with me talking as the alternative!

1.0 out of 5 stars review the audio NOT the book 6 Jan 2013
Format:Audio CD
OI... AMAZON... YOU'VE GONE TOO FAR THIS TIME

As they title says, Amazon are using reviews of the books NOT the audio cd's in the ratings for this product, the vast majority of people reviewing previous efforts would like Andy to read the books himself, including this one. I for one will not be buying this which is a real shame as we all love the ( Andy version) audio.

5.0 out of 5 stars Get them reading ! 28 May 2009
By Judy B.
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book was ordered for my Grandson. He enjoys the humour and it has really helped his reading come on leaps and bounds. The whole series of books by this author encourages the imagination and makes the child want to see what is on the next page. There has been much laughter, much enjoyment and much sharing of the whole experience with his family and friends. Please write much more and keep them reading please !

5.0 out of 5 stars Mr Gum and the Power Crystals 3 Jun 2009
Format:Paperback
This book is fantastic, and probably the best of all the Mr Gum books. It appeals to the adult sense of humour as well as childrens. My 10 year old is so keen on this series he buys them for presents for his friends.

Each chapter is fairly short which makes you want to keep turning the pages to read more.

A must have book!!
