This new edition of Jonathan Swift's classic is based on the 1726 text - the edition textual scholars now consider the most authoritative. It is accompanied by detailed explanatory annotations. "Context" collects materials that influenced Swift's writing of the novel, as well as documents that suggest its initial reception, including Swift's correspondence, Alexander Pope's peoms on "Gulliver's Travels" and relevant passages from "Gargantua and Pantagruel". "Criticism" includes 14 assessments of "Gulliver's Travels" by the Earl of Orrery, Sir Walter Scott, Pat Rogers, Michael McKeon, J.A. Downie, J. Paul Hunter, Laura Brown, Douglas Lane Patey, Dennis Todd, Richard H. Rodino, Irvin Ehrenpreis, Janine Barchas, Claude Rawson and Howard D. Weinbrot. A chronology and selected bibliography are included.
About the Author
Jonathan Swift was born in Dublin in 1667, after the death of his father. A cousin of Dryden, he was educated at Trinity College, Dublin, and for much of his early life travelled frequently between Ireland and England. Swift became increasingly occupied with Irish affairs, and wrote a great number of works including celebrated satires like 'A Tale of a Tub' and A Modest Proposal', political pamphlets and Gulliver's Travels -- all informed by his sense of the Whigs' unfair treatment of Ireland. Nearly all of his works were published anonymously, and he only received payment for Gulliver's Travels. He died, after a long illness in 1745. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.
