Having actively supported the Albion for nearly 30 years, and been 45 mins away from the Conference, the events of the last two seasons have been the things dreams are made of.
Back to Back championships wins has surpassed anything, apart from marriage and the birth of my children, that I have ever experinced in my life, even Spandau Ballet reforming couldn't top it, it was that good.
Gullhanger is one of those books you buy and then really piss the wife off by not being able to put it down. The Divsion Two Championship season was a rollercoaster ride with many unforgettable memories, this book just carries the memory on, whenever things are bad you can pick it up and re-live one of the greatest seasons in the Albion's history.
But its not just about the Albion, its about life, its pacy, witty and very funny. From missing the first away game to go shopping and then keeping in contact with a walkman, to finally clinching the championship with, err, a goaless draw against Swindon.
Book reviewing should be easy with a book this good, but don't read this waffle do the decent thing and buy the book, you won't regret it!

I picked this up thinking 'Oh No, not another bleeding Nicky Hornbyesque football and my mid-life crisis tome', but unlike many I've cringed through I strangely felt a need to carry on reading.
Mike Ward's frank and self-deprecating account trying to rediscover some passion in his life now that he had reached the grown up age of 41 is both hilarious and compelling.
By focusing on Brighton & Hove Albion - a small seaside town (oops City) second division team with a football ground in urgent need of demolition - you might think he would be facing an uphill task to reinvigorate his life.
But oddly the team suited him as well as his shiny new combat trousers fitted his waistline. I smirked and chortled right through this book as Ward became, at first just interested and then down right mouth-stretched-open-wide-yelling-at-the-top-of-his-voice passionate about a side which began to dominate his every waking moment.
He would covertly listen to commentaries through an earpiece while his wife wasn't watching, slip into the supporters' shop to try on the XXXL size replica top and secretly scheme to join travelling fans to away games.
I loved this book. There was not a page without a laugh and it all seemed so relevant. Then again I am 42, have three children and work 9-5, five days a week with er...a fading interest in football - is there something missing from my life?

Don't let the odd title put you off. Gullhanger is more about facing a mid-life crisis than adopting a new team. It's quite simply hilarious. Mike writes from the heart and made me laugh out loud. His list of pet hates is a killer! Although it's supposed to be about football, my wife kept nicking it for a quick read when my back was turned. Great stuff Mike, can't wait for the next one. Cheers!

OK if you follow Brighton but...
Some of the reviews on this page suggest that this is essential reading for all "true" football supporters. I'm afraid I can't agree. Read more
