Both the introduction to hard country for an entire generation and a key entry in what became the neo-traditional movement, Dwight Yoakam's debut, Guitars Cadillacs Etc. Etc, was a near-perfect recreation of Buck Owens's Bakersfield sound. "Bury Me" and "Miner's Prayer" are heartfelt homages to Yoakam's real Kentucky roots, while honky-tonks like "South of Cincinnati" remind how many Kentuckians headed to Ohio for good jobs. Most immediately striking, though, are Yoakam's covers--particularly versions of Johnny Horton's "Honky Tonk Man" and Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire"--which subtly tune up the Bakersfield sound with a rock & roll super-charge. --David Cantwell

Format:Audio CD
This was the very 1st Dwight album I bought many moons ago and I loved it from the word go! I had only heard of him vaguely and bought this 'on spec' but it still gets played even now! Have bought every album since and been to see him live too! Typical 'Bakersfield' sound~if that's your style he's the man! A couple of covers of 'classic' country songs and he appeals to all. I would certainly advocate a listen to this album as an introduction to the great man~you won't be disappointed!

I had bought this album first on vinyl, then as a CD, yes I know the arguments, but had always liked it. Then for some reason racked it away. Today, I found it again, played it, and it was joy all over. What a debut, energy, great arrangements, original writing, and all the while a throbbing twang, the real best of Bakersfield.
It is hard to believe that it was recorded quite a few years back, in the 1980s in fact.
Listen to Miners Prayer, it could be a 100 years old, definitely Monroe/Stanleys country, and then Heartaches By the Number, so young so confident.
Pete Anderson is sorting out the arrangements, and the musicians, contributing to the overall sound with guitar and harmonies and in a sense he is Dwights' Don Rich.
A classic, so glad I found it again, now you find it and enjoy.

ITS ALWAYS GREAT WHEN THEY REMASTER A GREAT CD AND THATS WHAT THEY DONE HERE WITH ONE OF DWIGHTS NOT ONLY HAVE THEY GOT THE ORIGINAL BUT THEY ADDED GREAT DEMOS SO YOU CAN HEAR RAW CUTS OF SONGS LIKE HONKY TONK MAN BUT YOU ALSO GET A FANTASTIC LIVE CD WITH UNISSUED SONG WHICH IS WORTH THE MONEY ALONE THIS WAS THE FIRST EVER CD I BOUGHT ALONE WITH A FEW OTHERS WHEN I BOUGHT MY FIRST EVER CD PLAYER THATS WHY IAM SO GLAD ITS BEEN REMASTERED AS A DELUXE EDITION THERES ALWAYS ONE GREAT CD A ARTIST BRINGS OUT THIS IS HIS
