Biography

Carlos Paredes was once almost hit by the famed Fado singer Amália Rodrigues, while performing at her home. Rumor has it that this was her reaction whenever she was deeply moved by someone’s artistry. Paredes was one of the greatest Portuguese guitarists, and a symbol of the Portuguese culture — not simply a great composer, but one of the men behind the world-wide ... Try not to get too emotional when you listen to this record - Carlos Paredes makes the guitar cry as he rips it apart, playing with so much emotion that its hard to not sit yourself down and drown in the melody.

Glorious and bittersweet 19 Feb. 2005
By James Jones - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Somehow, when you're in the throes of depression, listening to truly great depressing music is a beautiful catharsis. I mean no offense in saying that this album contains truly great depressing music, up there with John Dowland and the best of Chris Isaak.

Paredes was (alas, he's no longer with us) a virtuoso of the Portuguese guitar, and this album shows his skill as a composer and performer beautifully. "Cancão Verdes Anos" is by itself worth the price of admission.

like finding lost family 27 Nov. 1999
By portagee777@yahoo.com - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
I needed some music for a company wine tasting and my friend, who knew i was Portugese, gave me this disc and it changed my life. I live far away from my family and many have passed away, this music is very emotional and reminds me of family what a treasure. From a guitarist perspective the sound is unique and Mr.Paredes is a exteremely disciplined artist. Outstanding.

A master of the guitar 29 Dec. 2000
By F. A. Soares - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
I have loved great guitar playing all my life and I have to say that Carlos Paredes is one of the best in the world, and definitely of Portugal. This CD exemplifies that great tradition of excellent guitar playing that is present throughout Portugal and now has spread to many other parts of the world. I would highly recommend this CD to anyone who likes to listen to great guitar playing from a man that knows how to play. I would recommend this CD to anyone even if you are not Portuguese, you will not be disappointed.

Different, and Outstanding 24 May 2010
By Richard Wirtz - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Carlos Paredes was phenomenal.

Paredes, who died in 2004, was Portuguese. His instrument was the Portuguese guitar. If you want to know about the Portuguese guitar, the liner notes being unhelpful, you have to do a little research. It turns out that the instrument has twelve steel strings, strung in six courses comprising two strings each, and has a distinctive tuning mechanism.

The tunes on this album, the arrangements, and the performances are all wonderful. Since nobody else is credited with any of these, apparently they are all Paredes.

I wish I had the vocabulary to describe this music. You had best sample it. All I can say is, I have quite a few guitar albums, including some I am very fond of by Andres Segovia, and this is like nothing else I have ever heard.

It's no accident that this album has received nothing but five-star reviews.

Marvelous piece of music by one of the most virtuous player 29 May 2001
By Jose Filipe Rebelo - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
This is a great CD, where you get to know some of the standards for Portuguese Guitar, as well as some great compositions by this great player. Pedro Caldeira Cabral is, after Carlos Paredes, the best Portuguese Guitar player of our times. It's a great experience for those music lovers who enjoy virtuous playing. It's a must.
