Product Description

Product Description

Hailed by "Guitar Player" magazine as "perhaps the finest book on guitars ever produced," and by "Booklist" as "a Rolls Royce of construction guidebooks," this impressive volume is the first book of its kind to describe in depth how both steel-string and classical guitars are actually designed and built. Over 450 photographs, drawings, and diagrams reveal in exquisite detail the hows, whys, and how-to's of the traditional craft of guitarmaking, all accompanied by fascinating historical and technical notes. A comprehensive bibliography; a list of tools, materials, and supply sources; and a full index complete this uniquely authoritative reference -- and essential acquisition -- for guitar and craft enthusiasts, woodworkers, and students of instrument making everywhere.

Format:Paperback
This is probably the best book I've seen on guitar making and there are a good few around. Cumpiano shows not just how to make a guitar, but how to make and maintain tools and jigs - he talks through the reasons why he does what he does - he explains wood, how to cut it, store it, recognise it - and how to arrange the workshop. Quite honestly I don't think there's much in this book that is not explained. Even if your real interest is in making another stringed instrument, there is a great deal to be gleaned here. The illustrations are excellently chosen, showing clearly and in detail the themes treated in the text. What's not to like? :-)

One of the best 1 Feb 2008
Format:Paperback
This is a superb volume, taking you all the way from billet to finishing with multitude of photographs (all BW), tool lists, methodology along with a little history.

An essential read for the guitar builder.

I'd recommend it to anyone learning luthery, but I'd also say that you should read as much as you can. There are many approaches to guitar making, and one book can only describe one approach to a given task.

The best by the best 17 April 2006
Format:Paperback
Probably the definitive book on guitar making by one of the best guitar makers in the world. The time, love, care and excellence that William puts into making his guitars is transfered into this book. This book will not only give you a sound start in guitar making it will also inspire you years from now. His methods can be hard at times but only because he expects you to strive for the same quality he does. Anyone using this book to make their first guitar or their 100th won't be disapponited.
