5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent first step into 4 Oct 2010
By theRangel - Published on Amazon.com
This book starts with the pentatonic scale and then discusses tasty ways to work within its rules to sound great. If you're new to guitar, say six months or more, then you'll be hard pressed to find a better tool to help you learn how to solo. Think of it as a guard rail along your fretboard.

There are other books that also fill this niche but Koch is a good (and sometimes funny) writer that keeps you better engaged. He's good and he knows it so he drops the attitude. That makes the book quite inviting to those are new to this subject since they are not made to feel foolish.

The demo CD enhances the text. The book's layout is clear and easy to read.

This book doesn't cover all the concepts of solos and improvisation but that is not his goal. His goal is to make you sound good fast. For less than the price of a private guitar lesson this is really worth it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential purchase. 24 Oct 2012

If you want to dig in those old pentatonics this is the book for you. Greg Koch is a funny (and sometimes campy) guy but he is a serious educator and he loves to teach: this is an excellent book that gives you tips on soloing but also about rhythm playing. I think it goes really well with Tom Kolb's Soloing Strategies.

4.0 out of 5 stars Useful for Pentatonic Practice 18 Mar 2013

I originally gave this book 2 stars because the material is not presented in the most logical, gradual progression. Also, at times I felt that Greg was just trying to show off his skills. But over time I have grown to benefit from this book, especially the exercises that accompany each chapter. As long as you are mainly interested in pentatonic scales, and have software (like the free version of Audacity) to slow down a few of the tracks, it is a good book.
