1.0 out of 5 stars Not recommended for designers 19 Jan 2008
I bought this book because I was interested in designing a valve amplifier. I'm sorry to say that this book does not contain a single amplifier schematic, yet there is plenty of subjective discussion about the tone of different valves and amplifiers - most of which is complete rubbish in my opinion. The author also infers that amplifier electronics is some sort of arcane black art, rather than a quantifiable engineering science! This book is so poor I can't be bothered to write any more ....

For who that is starting to learn about tubes e electronics in general. Straight to what meters!
And for who wanna to start with a good material about vacuum tube i'd recommend the "The RAdio Amateurs handbook" from 1963 (40th edition). Its FULL of good material and its very very useful for the amateurs to the professional level.

2.0 out of 5 stars don't know this is aimed at 20 Sep 2006
Firstly, don't buy from firstline they charged me twice the price £30 total, ripp off!

The book repeats itself as you go through it, one passage refers to a schooled apprentice against a non schooled apprentice and how schooling in the electronics discipline is not necessary, duh!,if I had the choice of an apprentice I would opt for the schooled one every time, they will learn faster every time, some methods of testing with live equipment is dodgy, bad practice. The book goes nowhere and leads the untrained into areas that could hurt them.
