5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for complete beginners 30 April 2010
By PiX
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book has everything I was looking for. I was a complete beginner with no knowledge of music. I tried another book 'for beginners' but was left feeling totally bewildered and ready to give up. This book starts by addressing the things that confused me - how to hold the guitar, which was the first and sixth string, how to read tab, where to find every note on the guitar neck, how to read standard music notation, how to string the guitar, etc.

It has a handy chord chart and note chart in the front so you don't have to keep turning over pages to find everything. TAB is included with standard notation throughout.

The style is reassuring without being at all patronising. I personally enjoy the excruciating jokes and the lighthearted tone; it lightens the mood which is what a beginner needs. You can tell that the authors understand what you are going through and care enough to want to help you achieve your goals. It is written in a way that is accessable to all age groups. The language is intelligent and elegant. A book that describes a riff as having 'subterranean girth' displays
a certain type of eloquence and humour that I think anybody sensitive to music would appreciate.

It takes you through the learning process in a logical and methodical way. I am rarely left with unanswered questions - the authors have the experience to know what the beginner is thinking. The included cd shows you how the tunes are supposed to sound. I found the tuning track particularly useful.

If you are the sort of person who needs to know everything before you feel confident, this all in one book is for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not quite what it says on the tin 17 May 2010
By J. West
Format:Paperback
This book is fantastic and i have given it 5 star's.
I agree completly with the other review even down to thinking it would be better if it was ring bound.

But

Please use the "look inside" feature as i would not say it is 8 books in one,
Book 8 is just a chord chart and how to use the cd.

But this is worth every penny since buying the book i have leaned scales and slide guitar and im starting to sound great (I Think)

5.0 out of 5 stars The new Slash 24 Oct 2011
Format:Paperback
Guitar All-in-One For Dummies (For Dummies (Lifestyles Paperback))
I've had this book for just over a month now and without giving too much of my time or effort am already playing tunes other people can recognize on my first ever musical instrument. It starts from buying your instrument so really is ideal for beginners and tends to explain everything in plain English with quite a bit of humour which tends to keep you interested. All in all I'm very impressed with the methods used in the book I seem to be learning to play with little or no real effort. This was my first book of its type purchased at the recommendation of a friend but anything else I want to learn I will first be checking the "Dummies" series.
