Janine Booth, a active member of the RMT Trade union , as well as former parliamentary and local government candidate, has written a brilliant, well researched , account of the true story of real life socialist ( labour ) councillors in Poplar East London in 1921, who stood firm against the government of the days cuts imposed on their council, . They refused to sell out their beliefs and as important their working class constiuents. women and men councillors and Guardians went to Jail and still refused to budge. The government of Lloyd george caved in and the law was changed ( abit) and they were released in victory.A victory that meant cuts didnt happen.
This is a historic episode, alongside that of the Tolpuddle martyrs , the general strike, and other Labour movement events. And Janine has done the labour movement proud by getting it down in a book that is very readerable. John Mcdonell MP has written the forward to the book . He draws the parrell with today and he recommends any labour / socialist or political activist or historian read it.
I do too. Read it, you should too. buy it as well and spread the word that , We do not have to go along with cuts etc.And the Poplar councillors should be remembered as the heros they are. Janines book helps us do that.
