How it remained unpublished for so long is yet another mystery. Guilty's long, lean sentences, and something about the authorial detachment, also put me in mind of Kavan s last novel, Ice, published in 1967. Guilty is as tight as a drum from the word go. The sinister atmosphere is cine noir and the title reminds us that Kavan wrote in the era of Hitchcock. This is a very modern work. It still speaks of likely forms of devastation. A week after finishing it, I m still haunted. Kavan's art is breathtaking why is there no South Bank Show on this genius drug-fiend?'
