Review

'A new novel from a major writer 40 years after her death is a marvellous gift from beyond the grave. And freshness isn t the half of it it s magnetic and very disturbing. How it remained unpublished for so long is yet another mystery. Guilty's long, lean sentences, and something about the authorial detachment, also put me in mind of Kavan s last novel, Ice, published in 1967. Guilty is as tight as a drum from the word go. The sinister atmosphere is cine noir and the title reminds us that Kavan wrote in the era of Hitchcock. This is a very modern work. It still speaks of likely forms of devastation. A week after finishing it, I m still haunted. Kavan's art is breathtaking why is there no South Bank Show on this genius drug-fiend?' Duncan Fallowell, Financial Times 14th July 2007 --Financial Times

'Thrillingly unclassifiable' - The Guardian 30th June 2007 --The Guardian

Kavan's dreamscapes recall the hidden gardens of T.S. Eliot s Four Quartets . . . her writing, so wild and emotionally fraught, represents a rare form of inner resilience. Times Literary Supplement --Times Literary Supplement

Product Description

Peter Owen Publishers are proud to announce the publication of an entirely new work by Anna Kavan: Guilty has only existed previously as an unedited manuscript, languishing in the archives of the University of Tulsa. Set in an unspecified but eerily familair time and landscape, Guilty is the story of the central character s,Mark, struggle against the machinations of a hostile society and bureaucracy. Suffering at first from the persecution of his father as a conscientous objector his life quickly comes under the control of the Machiavellian Mr Spector, an influential government minister who arranges Mark s education, later employment and even accomodation. It is when Mark tries to break free from Spector s influence that his life begins to unravel . . .

Guilty is a Pleasure 15 Jun 2008
By D. Glasser - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I was so very pleased to learn that this book had been published. I bought it as soon as I found out. I absolutely love Anna Kavan's darkly beautiful use of language, and Guilty did not disappoint. I already own close to a dozen of her books so this one felt very familiar; with her ever present large automobiles, stifling bureaucracies, ice-cold relationships, etc. A wonderful addition my collection. Thank you Peter Owen.
