Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
Medieval specialist ensemble Diabolus in Musica here present a recording of Guillaume de Machaut's 'Messe de Notre Dame' along with Propers for a full votive Mass to the Virgin Mary, with a couple of motets from the Ivrea Codex thrown in. It's an engaging performance fully deserving of five stars, but still not quite the best.

That accolade goes to the recording by Ensemble Gilles Binchois which is for me the most beautiful, whereas this Diabolus version, with the ensemble's sound centered lower with only having tenors, baritones, bass-baritones & bass, has more solemnity and gravitas. I wouldn't want to be without either of these interpretations, and for that matter neither would I want to be without the unusual arrangement by Ensemble Organum.

Foldout digipak with booklet containing some notes in French & English, Latin sung texts with French & English translations.
