Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

In the past 50 years enthusiastic amateur astronomers have made a number of important discoveries. Starry Night Backyard is a CD-ROM package which is targeted at this audience, adding greatly to the tools at the amateur astronomer's disposal.

The package is extraordinarily eclectic--one moment you can be viewing the sky as it now is in Abidjan or Rio de Janeiro, and the next you can visit Mars or indeed any location within 20,000 light years (surely enough for most of us). This range is supplemented by some excellent visual effects: the moving graphics, as you travel through the solar system and past the edges of planets and moons, are quite otherworldly. Supplemented to previous editions is a lengthy companion book--"Starry Night Companion"--which adds to the user's knowledge of the night sky, and the facility to create your own star charts for the next time you want to go out stargazing.

The software is designed so that you can select your home geographical coordinates, and then explore the constellations as you perceive them from home. However, what really distinguishes this CD-ROM is the scope it offers in terms of interstellar "travel". With the range of viewing locations on offer, you can experience the fearful darkness of Pluto and the searing heat of a sunny day on Mercury. You can also turn to interesting events in the past, including many solar and lunar eclipses, and experience the passage of comets and asteroids.

This range is what will really attract people to this package. Among the consolations for the freezing winter temperatures suffered by those who live in northern Europe and the northern part of North America are the crisp wintry nights, when the stars are as clearly visible as at any other time in the year; now, with the help of Starry Night Backyard, we can all go out and discover the mysteries of the heavens for ourselves.--Toby Green

5.0 out of 5 stars Out of this world, 16 Feb 2003
Starry night backyard is positioned in the middle of the three products in the Starry night range. If you have a passing interest in the night sky or are a keen amateur astronomer the only question to ask about Starry Night is which product to buy: beginner, backyard or pro.

The backyard package is on two CDs. The first CD contains Starry Night backyard and the QuickTime movie viewer. The latter is needed to use Starry Night. If you don't have the full version of QuickTime then the basic installation can be installed from the CD.

Once you have installed Starry Night backyard it is worth visiting the Starry Night web site. There is an update to the Starry Night v 4 program on the web so it is worth updating the program straight after installation. The positions of comets etc can also be regularly updated via the web. The manual included with Starry Night refers to a seti@home plugin. If you run seti@home this plug-in will show you where your current work unit is positioned in the sky. Oddly the plug-in is not included on the CD but can be downloaded from the Starry Night Web site.

When started for the first time Starry Night shows the current positions of stars in the sky. The viewing location can be adjusted to a major town or city near to where you live or you can input the exact co-ordinates of where you are viewing from. You can move forward and backwards in time at various speeds to see how the night sky changes. One interesting thing to do is set the location and time to your birth date so you can see the sky as it was when you were born. By using the movie options the entire evening can be viewed in a few minutes and you can watch the various planets and stars move across the night sky. You can also set the home location to another planet so you can see the night sky as if you were on the surface of Mars! The night sky can also be adjusted for light pollution so city dwellers can see a realistic mapping of stars that are visible in their location. By removing the light pollution you will be amazed just how many stars are obscured by man-made light sources. Charts can be printed out so you can take a star map with you when you go outside to view the night sky. There are a lot of customizable options e.g. you can identify and name the constellations which is a great help when you are starting out trying to identify the objects in the night sky. The package includes a short book: "Starry Night Companion" which will enable you to get the best out of software.

The second CD contains over 90 minutes of video material on a variety of astronomical subjects. These can either be installed on your PC or read directly from CD if you are short of disk space. The video material is introduced by world renowned researchers and complex subjects are explained in interesting and clear terms.

Starry Night is by far the best PC based astronomy package I have tried and is highly recommended even if you have just a passing interest in the night sky.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb, 15 May 2003
By starry eyed (Norwich, Norfolk United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
The first time I used this program I was blown away by the ease with which you can pull yourself around the sky! Zooming in to planets and the Sun is really good fun, and seeing what stars and planets are in the sky in real time, whether obscured by the Sun's light or not opens up the sky whatever the time or weather.
My computer is being fixed right now, and I have pangs for my Starry Night Backyard. The side panel is a little tricky to read, but easily overcome. I love it!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice features, but big and bulky, 5 Feb 2003
The improved graphics and additional features are excellent in this new version of Starry Night Backyard, but make sure you have at least the recommended specs as it runs amazingly slow on anything less. If you want something that does the job of a home planetarium, still looks nice but doesn't have all the (perhaps extraneous) features of this, stick to version 3 (still available through Amazon at the moment); its small, fast and shows you everything you need.

But on a new PC, I expect this would be a very nice piece of software.
