Are you addicted to Guild Wars?, 11 July 2005
This review is from: Guild Wars: Official Strategy Guide (Prima Official Game Guides) (Paperback)
Of course you are. You got the game, installed it, and haven't stopped playing it since. You've haunted all the online fora you can find, clicking through map after map, and you still can't find that NPC who can give you that skill or the collector who has your armour.
If this is you then you need this book.
The map is fabulous and the book has been put together by people who have actually played the game so it reads like a walkthrough. There are very few spoilers in here. Just enough information so that if you get totally stuck you can look up the quest and work out where you've gone wrong.
From where to find Gwen with a friendly bear (we all wish it wasn't friendly) to negotiating the Ascension quests, the guide will get you through. There are full lists of everything, from the monsters in the game to what you need to craft every bit of armour possible. Tips, hints and words of caution thorugh every page flag up the quest's vulnerable spots, giving your party so much more of a chance to beat the odds. Each quest has a mini map on the page, and every monster and NPC is marked in place so you can locate them or avoid them.
It even gave me the chance to tell a LVL20 how to do a quest when I was still a clueless newbie. Priceless.
So, if you're hanging around the American servers and you see a R/E say that she's stopping to check the guide, that'll be me. Type /dance and say hello.

Its Good...But Already its Out of Date, 4 April 2006
This review is from: Guild Wars: Official Strategy Guide (Prima Official Game Guides) (Paperback)
First of all I have to admit that this Strategy Guide is brilliant if you are lost and don't know how to proceed. Its helped me understand the game better and enjoy it to its fullest. However, potential buyers of this book should be aware that this edition is currently out of date so you won't be able to find out more about places such as Sorrows Furnace and the Deldrimor War Camp in the Southern Shiverpeaks, which came into the game in the second half of 2005, so if you're looking to find out more about Sorrows Furnace and how to get there you're out of luck. You'll just have to ask somebody in the game to find out how to get there. Also, as time has gone by some of the NPCs have moved positions so the maps inside the guide are not always as accurate as they appear though it is mostly in the beginning portion of Guild Wars itself. You may also find that some of the spells and skills you may be looking for have changed Bosses so its hit and miss whether the skill your looking for is with that particular Boss or not.
Still, this guide has its positive points. It gives detailed descriptions of each profession and what the best combo to go for with each profession, lists the different types of armour you can wear with each profession and what the stats of the armour are. It also has walkthroughs of every story mission on Guild Wars which is pretty handy if you don't know where to go and what on earth you're meant to be doing and has all the descriptions of every skill currently available (Though you need to be aware that when Guild Wars: Factions comes out this will be somewhat useless to you.).
On the whole this is a very useful guide to have around if you need to find out something though I don't entirely trust all of its content. As with all MMORPG Strategy Guides, this one gets out of date pretty quickly as the game evolves. With Guild Wars: Factions coming out at the end of this month also you may find that the Guide alone is not enough and have to resort to the good ol' fashioned 'explore on your own' tactics to see the game in its entirety.
