The introduction includes some fascinating history of Tyria from the original games, and the time in between the first and second games, plus events leading into the present day. MMO basics, a glossary and regions and races information are included here. Next we have Character creation, a how to play guide and first experiences in each starting zone. Professions are gone into in great detail, as is crafting. There is a bestiary which I haven't investigated fully for fear of spoilers and then the game guide.
The guide to the game given here is deliberately not complete. It handholds you through early zones in great detail, teaching you how to do things so that when you get to the higher level areas, you'll know how to work it all out for yourself. Dungeon guides look pretty complete and include tips and hints on how to beat each one. Again I haven't looked too deep into this as I don't want to be spoiled, or to unintentionally leave spoilers for others in this review. Finally there are interviews with Arenanet with some fascinating insights into the mindset of the people who helped to create this stunning world.
The map stand that comes extra to this limited edition version of the guide is like a small calendar style book of maps which I think covers every area in the game, from pvp to pve.Read more ›
The book itself has a beautiful hard cover, and comes with desktop stand-up map which has a pretty nice print quality (smooth and slightly glossy). Inside the guide itself there is an abundance of lovely artwork, basic Guild Wars lore (covering the time before Guild Wars and then the actual Guild Wars and their expansions), a Beastiary, a small section on Crafting, and basic info on PvP/WvW. It has a class guide that gives you basic information on each class, what their main strengths are, and lists every skill and weapon the class can use. Tips are given on which weapons to use in what situation, and also what skills are more useful for PvE or PvP. At the end of each class section is some information on traits for that class, and a break down of the trait lines in terms of what they do and their respective bonuses. There is no information on 'jumping puzzles' or on where you can farm crafting materials, or secret locations and quests in GW2.Read more ›
I was hoping for something encyclopaedic; but, ultimately, for the level 80s, this guide isn't much more than a very pretty trip down memory lane.
Sure, everything you need is freely available online, but wouldn't it be nice to have it all together in a handy guide next to your keyboard (or bed!)?
I would have loved a comprehensive guide to finding every Ranger pet, and a walkthrough of the vistas and jumping puzzles, and a few pages on recipes and crafting at the mystic forge, and a guide to crafting every legendary, and a little bit on dragons and spawn rates and some info on the champions and maybe even some suggested strategies, and details of karma merchants and their gear and gear stats - but none of this stuff is covered.
Maybe the nature of a world which is subject to inexorable balancing and evolution precludes the possibility of a 'finished' guide?
Provided you are not expecting anything other than a gorgeous and perfunctory introduction to this amazing world, and you don't mind the thin pages, this is a wonderful buy.
First the positive:
- The book is bound beautifully with lots of stunning artwork covering everything from races/professions to locations
- For anyone who hasn't played the previous game then it brilliantly covers the history and general information regarding the Guild Wars universe
- The extra map stand highlights all the key scout/skill/waypoint locations for every zone - definitely handy to quickly see where you are without going into map (sometimes you come out of it into a fight!)
- The zone maps in the book include what resources you can find here which will prove handy when you progress your chosen crafting professions
- The information is less likely to become outdated as they have stated roughly what skills do (i.e. effect) rather than the statistics. As long as a skill isn't radically changed then this should stay relevant
- When starting out with a new character the detail about locations, starting events and gameplay basics is very useful
Now the negative:
- The pages feel very thin so even with sweaty fingers I'd be hesistant about reading it and crinkling them
- Once you progress through this game and find your main "build", you'll probably use the book a lot less (especially since the amount of information decreases too)
- There is no "comprehensive" information.Read more ›
