5.0 out of 5 stars A great web-series, even if you're not a gamer 20 Jan 2010
Verified Purchase
Felicia Day stars in and is a driving force behind the little web series that could, "The Guild".

Following the on and offline exploits of a gaming guild - a diverse crew who play a "World of Warcraft"-like PC game - "The Guild" offers a bite-sized, dip-in-and-dip-out slice of comedy and drama that entertains even if you don't play games.

I saw this first online and can endorse springing for the dvd version. The extras are great, the picture transfer is far nicer than web video and the love and enthusiasm of all concerned is underlined by being able to watch the two seasons in one uninterrupted sitting.

Highly recommended, for fans of "Buffy", "The IT Crowd" and nerdy coolness.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious and Relatable 13 Jun 2011
The Guild first made its appearance on YouTube sometime in 2007 and immediately became a success due to its relatability with the online generation. The show focuses on six somewhat dysfunctional people who seem to only one common interest, and that interest is the role-playing game they play online (a game in the vein of World of Warcraft).

The main plot revolves around Cyd Sherman. Cyd is a neurotic and fretful young woman who has become a hermit due to her issues with real life. Cyd finds some comfort in video blogging about her real life problems (in which, a portion of the show will take place as she talks) but mostly her consolation comes from online gaming. Under the name Codex, Cyd dives into a massive world of escapism, performing as a priest in an RPG only ever referred to as "The Game". Although Cyd doesn't have any real life friends, she socialises with a small group of fellow gamers who have formed a Guild, who she only knows by voice chat over the internet.

Jobless, poor, no real social life, and recently ditched by her therapist, Cyd thinks life can't get any worse. Only moments after discovering that a fellow guild mate, Zaboo, hasn't logged in their game for two days, Cyd finds him on her doorstep. With blue rose in hand, Zaboo professes his undying love for 'Codex', and reveals he has come to the physical realm to hold her due to her sounding sad and lonely.

As sweet as Zaboo is, Cyd finds him inappropriate, creepy and annoying. Reeling after the revelations of his cyberstalking and his intentions to live with her and form a co-dependency, Cyd decides it may be time to meet the other guild members, Vork, Bladezz, Clara and Tinkerballa in real life to discuss the situation on what she should do to rid herself of Zaboo once and for all.

Codex -- aka Cyd Sherman -- has a sad, sorry life. Her only social life is her RPG guild, her therapist has dumped her, she has no job, and now her online friend Zaboo is living in her apartment.

And that is only the setup for "The Guild Seasons 1 and 2," a hilariously geeky webseries that follows the misadventures of a bunch of RPG geeks in their offline lives. Everything about this series is mind-blowingly funny -- the actors, the scripting, and the many troubles that these nerds encounter in their lives (ranging from an angry Hinjew mom to a cosmetic orb).

In the first season, Codex (Felicia Day) is horrified when her fellow guild member Zaboo (Sandeep Parikh) shows up at her door, and declares his undying love for her. Having nowhere else to go, he ends up living on Codex's couch, even as Codex struggles with Zaboo's hostile mother. Will Codex be able to get rid of Zaboo without relinquishing him to the iron grip of his mom?

Meanwhile, the lecherous teen Bladezz (Vincent Caso) causes unrest in the group, causing Guild leader Vork (Jeff Lewis) to talk about the possibility of kicking him out. But it turns out that Bladezz has some clout with the group, no matter what

The second season has Codex and Zaboo finding a new apartment, since Zaboo's mom got her evicted. But her apartment comes with a bonus: a sexy stuntman that Codex desperately wants to impress. At the same time, she manages to unload Zaboo on Vork as his new roommate, and Tinkerballa (Amy Okuda) uses her feminine charms to get stuff from Bladezz.

Then the Guild is hit by a terrifying threat: four hours of server downtime! How will they cope with four hours of the real world? One word: PARTY. Several words: wild party that will involve fighting, kissing and betrayal.

5.0 out of 5 stars A new future.... and its fun... 21 Mar 2012

I don't have the time to chat about everything that is right about this show..... so in short... its a web-based series so has a unique feel seperate to studio nonsense - it feels like a revolution before your eyes.... a future where people can make good quality shows of whatever they like and be heard (watched)

Felicia day is of course totally gorgeous - but you quickly see passed that to her believable portrayal of an awkward geekgirl (unlike Sarah Michelle in Buffy - who did not make a believable fighter in any sense - "So Sarah why do you think you got the part?") Chuckle....

The show is unique, irreverent, brilliantly scripted, well produced and funny and can even be enjoyed by those who have never played on line games (but some knowledge of the games or of people who play them is a bonus for the insider jokes)

You can watch this stuff free on-line but if you want to see more independent stuff being produced away from the evil studios..... support the cause and pay the measerly sum to invest in the future of freedom!!! Hey hey.... I impressed myself then..... chuckle..... plus you get loads of free extrs on the DVD. Enjoy!!!!

Oh and it deffo has repeat watches in it - I am on the fourth run.... ;)
