5.0 out of 5 stars Covers all aspects of the supply chain 5 Sep 2011
Format:Hardcover
Many books with Supply Chain in the title are generally just about extended Logistics practices. This Guide to Supply Chain Management is unique in that it truly covers all the aspects of supply chain, including planning/S&OP and manufacturing. The Guide covers the basics of each aspect of the supply chain, and I believe that any reader of the book will learn about fields of practice not often covered in other logistics-biased supply chain books. The three authors have clearly contributed their own expertise to the broad supply chain spectrum. Having worked in this industry for twenty years I think this guide is both a great introduction to supply chain for newcomers, and will also broaden the understanding of seasoned professionals.

5.0 out of 5 stars Agile and clear 5 July 2011
Format:Hardcover
This guide starts as an essential reading for supply chain students, with an agile overview of the key supply chain functions. Plan, Source, Make, Delivery and Return are all explained in their fundamentals, also with the support of a wide range of figures, tables and diagrams.
The second part of the book moves beyond operations and looks at some strategic supply chain issues. In this it is very valuable also for senior supply chain practitioners and general managers who want to develop a strategic understanding of the supply chain.
The authors outline the importance of developing supply chain strategies aligned to corporate strategies, explain how to prepare a people learning and development plan, look at the impact of supply chain activities on financial and customer service indicators, discuss a simple model to plan and execute the outsourcing of warehousing and distribution.
Every chapter is very clear and simple, completed by a practical case study and rich in suggestions for further readings that make it an excellent reference book.

This appears to be another new book in the area of supply chain management but it does exactly what it says on the tin. The authors clearly have a good working knowledge of the various elements of the supply chain function as practical examples are used throughout to illustrate and clarify points. This is one of those rare books where the topic really is brought to life with interesting and entertaining examples.
The supply chain process (mercifully not referred to as value chain) is broken down into clear and logical steps: plan, source, make, deliver and return. In addition to these stages the book covers broader but closely related areas including supply chain strategy, people, finance, customer service and outsourcing. Each chapter is well structured and covers all the key elements with clear illustrations that are easy to follow and understand.
This book cannot be too highly recommended to practitioners of supply chain whether they are students or managers wanting to brush up their skills. Unlike many business books this was a pleasure to read so it will be well received by supply chain enthusiasts everywhere. Five stars are well earned as examples of good practice shine out from every chapter.
