5.0 out of 5 stars The beginning and end to all things 19 July 2005
By bernie VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
For those new to this book it is pretty much the project manager's bible in the same sense that "The C Programming Language" by Brian W Kernighan, Dennis M. Ritchie is to programming. That is to say this is the one to get off the ground with. It is also the basis of the PMP (Project Management Professional) test given by the PMI® (Project Management Institute.)

It comes in both paper, and CD-ROM using Adobe Reader. I have seen the paper book but bought the CD version it includes a tutorial on how to use the CD-ROME media. The media is a mater of preference. There are 425 pages and a good index and references.

Be aware that there are earlier versions. At the time of this review this is the latest version; however as The Body of Knowledge advances so will the PMBK (Project Management Body of Knowledge Guide ®.) There for it is advisable for people that have read the earlier version to now read this version as a few terms have changed and some emphases have shifted.

As with any institutional book this is a good starting place or a solid foundation. However it may not cover concentrating on the waterfall concept of project management many instances such as the Unified method among others. They also do not take in many external influences as FDA requirements. And it is up to the reader to reconcile the two institutions.

Some changes to the Third Edition:

* Differences in project life cycle and produce life cycle are better explained.

* The number of process changed from 39 to 44.

* A greater emphasis is placed on the importance of Process Groups.

* Chapter three "Project Management Process for a Project" is moved and renamed "The Standard for Project Management of a Project."

* The project management processes now show process integration.

PMBOK is a masterfully crafted project management ANSI standard which focuses on nine knowledge areas, refined through the experience of more than six-hundred reviewers.

Although PMBOK demonstrates generic ideas, formulas and theory on how to conduct project management successfully it has gained worldwide recognition because of its industry-wide applicability. Other project management frameworks or methodologies such as COBIT, ITIL and BPO have similarities to PMBOK but they focus on either IT, Governance or outsourcing management which limits their applicability, PRINCE2 being an exception here. It is obvious to me why PMBOK has rightfully gained an international status.

Since the PMBOK is based on and describes best practice of numerous PM professionals working in various industries; the documentation, PM tools and techniques refer to experience from successful projects drawn from these various industries.

4.0 out of 5 stars Professional field guide for project management 24 Nov 2008
By Rolf Dobelli TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
Volunteer committees at the Project Management Institute (PMI) created this guide to the processes involved in managing projects. Communication among clients, the project team and vendors is crucial to project management, so the book establishes a common vocabulary and a standard way of discussing a project. The book focuses on going from step to step with reliable coordination and smooth communication. Newcomers will find it helpful as they become conversant in the way professionals view and discuss project management. And, given that this is a standard work in the field, professionals are likely to regard it already as a reliable reference, including the useful process checklist. getAbstract applauds this manual's solid utility for its targeted audience. It is even quite readable, though it is directed only to insiders.
