Steve Unwin has a remarkable knack of packing every page with information in an accessible, yet highly stimulating way. This book is not only an invaluable aide for students of Brecht but an inspiring and fascinating insight into his life, his works, and his contribution to the process of theatre making for anybody who wants to know. Unwin writes clearly and with lucidity, making you feel as if you are hearing about well-known things for the first time. His fresh, conversational style makes this book a must for people of all ages - it draws you right in. Can't wait for the next ouevre.

Highly recommended 27 May 2011

It is clear that this book is written by a theatre-maker. It is practical, concrete and fufills its promise in every way. It is called a guide and guide us is what it does. It explains the key terms in Brecht's repertoire and places Brecht's work in the context of other great movements in art, history and politics. It takes us through the work and its importance step by step. It manages to tread that fine balance between pedagogy and artistic stimulus. I have used this book with acting students encountering the work of Brecht for the first time in performance and not only did the actors find it accessible and clear, they came to rely on it as a working manual. Highly recommended.
