Guide to Norfolk Churches,

This is an updated one volume version of Mr Mortlock's original 3 volume guide, which makes it a more convenient companion for visiting churches. I have found it useful (my main interest has been rood screens and wall paintings) but perhaps a more thorough revision of the contents would have been advisable. That aside, it makes a good companion to Pevsner.

Inevitably specialist publications like this are going to be a little expensive and at over £20 this one certainly is, particularly with the paucity of pictures and in black & white too. However, this should not put anyone off interested in the subject as there is arguably no finer book on the subject available and it can be considered as currently the definitive text.
The addition of architectural time lines, a glossary of architectural terms (highlighted in the text) along with a guide to saints and there significance, makes it particularly useful for someone new to the subject. Inevitably space is limited because of the sheer numbers of churches that Norfolk enjoys, never the less I for one would be happy to see an expansion on what is here and would particularly enjoy a chapter that would act as both a primer on church architectural history as well as the historical, social and political context it occurred in. If not included in a single volume then acting as an accompanying text would suffice. The inclusion of the glossary is such an important component of the book that this is another area of the book I would argue for expanding too. In all then one to highly recommend. Ashley Carr
