5.0 out of 5 stars inverweirdness 16 Jun 2009
By DS
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a great fun book, but the previous reviewer has got it badly wrong. It does NOT have "the history of every sighting of the Loch Ness monster" - as the author says himself in Chapter 1, this would take up an entire book - instead, he has selected what he calls "especially interesting episodes". So if you are looking for an in depth history of the Loch and its monster, then you should be looking elsewhere - but if you want a fun guide to general weirdness around the Inverness area, buy this.

I purchased The Guide to Mysterious Loch Ness and the Inverness Area while my wife and I were visiting Urquhart Castle and I was immediately amazed at the density of the material inside this fantastic book. I have a degree in Anthropology and am deeply interested in both archaeology and folklore and I was very pleased with Geoff Holder's excellent research and scholarship. When I was a boy I used to frequent my local library, always looking for a book on the strange and unusual. Naturally at that age I was interested in the Loch Ness Monster and came across a book that discussed so much more than the monster. I was introduced to the world of ghosts, fairies, ancient sites, etc. The moment I lifted Holder's book off the shelf I was filled with nostalgia for that long forgotten book from my childhood, as it too discusses so much more than just the monster. I could not put this book down and have read it cover to cover at least four times. I am planning on purchasing as many of Holder's books as I can.

5.0 out of 5 stars is nessie real?? 18 Nov 2007
Format:Paperback
All Geoff's books are great, but this one is phenomenal. He uses all kinds of sources from over the centuries for his books, and his pictures are amazing too.

This one has the history of every sighting of the loch ness monster.

It also has the stories of all the eccentrics who have hunted for nessie over the years - some of them are absolutely hilarious. I particularly liked the group who planned to use their psychic powers to manifest monsters across the globe. Did it work? Only one way to find out...

The section on Aleister Crowley is fascinating too, a real insight into 'the wickedest man in the world' - his magical wars with his rivals (sending his demonic minions across the channel to attack their servants etc), the history of Boleskine and how he planned to use it to gain ultimate magical powers and sexual irrestibility, all the hauntings that have affected the house since - including all the led zep stuff and the haunted beds that found their way into some local hotels!

It's also got loads of local ghost stories in it (don't read it at night), witches, ufos, celtic myths, skulls and wierd museum exhibits and where to find them. It would make the best Christmas present for anyone who knows the area, like mysterious happenings, likes a good laugh (his books are hilarious) or is a nessie fan.
