Nicholas Cook is one of the most intelligent and musical of writers and thinkers. This book is a well thought out and engaging summary of music analysis, which in turn is an indispensable part of the scholarly study of music. The reviewers who complain of the difficulty of the book have obviously never read any heavy duty music analysis, because if they had they would instantly see the difference between the obfuscation and pseudo-scientific mumbo-jumbo which clutters up so much of the field, and Cook's incisive, clear headed, and elegantly written perceptions.

No single-volume book can possibly be exhaustive in explaining all the methods of analysis on all styles of music, yet the coverage in this book is exceptional. Crucially, Professor Cook weighs up the features of different methods, uncovers some of the the inherent bias that underpins analytical literature, and (with numerous worked examples) shows how to go about this difficult task.
This is a specialist academic book, suitable (but challenging) for undergraduates and beyond. Re-reading will almost certainly be necessary!

This book is one of the reasons why analysis is seen as an overly-complicated part of musical education. It is long-winded, draws pointless analogies and is yet another example of the self-perpetuating school of thought that is rife throughout music literature.
