Product Description

Not for Tourists guidebooks are map-based, neighbourhood by neighbourhood guides designed to lighten the load of already street-savvy residents, commuters, business travellers, and yes, tourists too. Each map is marked with user-friendly icons identifying the services and entertainment centres that you look for as you make your way through town: everything from post offices, car parks, restaurants, bars, DIY stores and gyms to information on hotels, airports, public transport and parks. Whether you're a seasoned resident, a returning visitor, relocating, or someone who is completely new in town, Not for Tourists guidebooks help you make the most of your time in the city, while you're in it.

This review is for the 2009 NFT guide.

The NFT guides started off with US cities and this is the first guide for a UK city. Although I'm a Londoner, I bought this because of the maps and the small size and I own the Manhattan guide, which found useful. I mainly bought the London NFT as a pocket map to help find my way around when I occasionally get lost. There is a map on the left page and the right contains a list of notable locations such as restaurants, cafes, shops, landmarks, etc. The maps are quite detailed and the scale is large, but there are still omissions which is frustrating. The large scale is a two-edged sword since it makes the map difficult to use for planning longer routes.

My problems with the guide are:
1. There are errors and, despite the large scale, omissions in the maps. For example, I've seen tube stops without labels, small streets that are missing, mis-plotted locations on the map, and the SOAS university campus miss-labelled as UCL.
2. London is full of interesting pubs, yet the guide does not contain a separate section for pubs on the right-hand page.
3. On many pages (especially outside central London) there are few landmarks labelled on each map despite the fact that the area does contain notable pubs or cafes (for example).
4. Most of the cafes and eateries labelled are chains such as Starbucks, Cafe Nero, Pret, etc. Many maps contain only labels for these. Although there is an unfortunate abundance of such chain stores, the NFT does miss out independent establishments despite there being room to add them in on the right hand page. I don't know if this is due to editorial laziness or sponsorship, but it really is a pity.

Overall, I find the guide convenient but I really wish the maps were more reliable and it didn't insist on showing me the way to the nearest Starbucks. Hope the 2010 guide solves these problems.

Not For Anyone 17 April 2009
This book misleads. As a resident of London, the factual errors indicate to me that this has clearly been written by people who have never visited London themselves. Maybe they did their research by googling. Local Post Offices are missed out, but ones a mile away are mentioned instead; one distinct 'village' has two sections in the guide 20 pages apart!; suitable shops are ignored, whilst unsuitable ones are mentioned. slightly naff supermarkets are all listed even if they are nowhere near the district, but local ones are ignored. This cut and paste job from Mars will bewilder the poor purchaser, leaving them turning round and round as they try to match the descriptions in the book with reality!

NFT London 7 Feb 2009
A great little book, I was originally disappointed at the very small handbook size, but actually that's perfect for carrying around with you.

Definitely for the locals rather than the tourists.

Couple of improvements would be:

- Some way of locating each bar/restaurant on each map rather than a general 'bar' icon which isn't specific for each different venue.
- More in the guide section - although it seems to have picked up on the very best pubs / restuarants etc.

A great little book, we use it a lot, and it helped us finally find a decent Indian restaurant near Brick Lane....!
