Book Description

13 Mar 2012 Hunger Games Film Tie in
An indispensable guide to The Hunger Games trilogy -- will you survive without it? At the end of the world, there is only Panem, a ruined nation where democracy is dead and the Hunger Games -- a tournament in which twenty-four desperate teens must fight to the death live on-air -- pass for primetime entertainment. Sadistic though the rules may be, Suzanne Collins' dangerously addictive tales of adventure, intrigue, romance and revenge have left a generation of readers hungry for more. Taking you deeper into the districts than ever before, this enthralling guide features: Illuminating profiles of the trilogy's main players / In-depth coverage of the 74th and 75th Hunger Games / Beautiful, original illustrations and detailed maps / Mind-bending quizzes, crosswords and tests to determine your own strategy for winning the Hunger Games / A collection of thought-provoking fact boxes, uncovering the literary and historical sources that inspired Collins work. Exploring Katniss' incredible transformation from anonymous Seam girl to Mockingjay warrior in full, and covering all the aspects of the trilogy that fans love best, this unofficial guide is a must-have for all aspiring tributes.

4.0 out of 5 stars Actually, this is a great book 29 Mar 2012
By Lauz04
I had my doubts about this book because, let's be honest, it's kind of cashing in on a craze. But actually, it's a really great book. Not only is it a kind of encyclopaedia of all things Hunger Games - with really great illustrations of the main characters and the nasty mutts they come into contact with - but it also provides a lot of other facts about Suzanne Collins's many inspirations for the story (but not in a dull, patronising way!)The author has created a couple of fake characters to take you around parts of Panem (OK, it sounds cheesy, but she writes well so it's actually pretty funny!) and I particularly like the final chapter on 'How to Survive the Hunger Games'. Companion guides are always going to include a lot of things you already know - that goes for the official ones too! - but this is a nice little book and not just a rehashing of Collins's story. I'm glad I bought it and I'd recommend it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Does exactly what it says on the tin...and more! 29 Mar 2012

This is a great guide to the Hunger Trilogy for hard-core fans and newbies alike! I bought this guide because I read The Hunger Games a while ago and wanted to refresh my memory before watching the film but didn't have the time to re-read the trilogy. I expected a basic run-down of events but unlike some other guides that I flicked through that just contained snapshots of the film, this guide was well laid out with chapters devoted to different aspects of the Hunger Games (characters, places, muttations etc). This is handy if there are only certain things you would like to 'revise' on and there is even a little quiz at the end of each chapter to test your knowledge. Because the guide is quite in-depth, I would also recommend this for those of you who can't be bothered to read the books and want to know what the fuss is about. Overall, great guide and lovely illustrations too. A*

5.0 out of 5 stars Review of 'Guide to the Hunger games' 5 May 2012
I think this is a great guide to the hunger games and definitely a book that will suit hardcore hunger games fans and new fans who have yet to read the books. I myself am a devoted fan of the books and wasn't quite ready to say goodbye to the hunger games craze, so I decided to buy this guide, and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised! I thought this book would be just a recap of the books and film, but really its so much more. In the book the author has included interesting historical facts that influenced the hunger games trilogy, as well as a full analysation of all 3 books in great detail. I found some aspects of the trilogy a bit confusing but this book cleared them up for me and gave me extra information so i could have a clearer insight into what was going on in suzanne collins's mind when she wrote the books. The writer Caroline Carpenter has included a little biography of each important character in the books and has included information about each of their significance to other characters, the book and the political story line. She has also recapped every major event in the trilogy including the famous love triangle between katniss, Gale and Peeta, which is great for people who want to know about the book before seeing the film, but don't have the time to read the actual trilogy, or just want to gain some extra knowledge on the trilogy that is currently what anyone is talking about. Furthermore, I think that this book is really for fans of any age as for the younger fans quizzes, and games are included and for the older fans there is a more historical and political aspect displayed in the actual text.
Also the illustrations are beautiful and link in with the film very well, capturing each actor perfectly, good job!

3.0 out of 5 stars An okay book 17 Jun 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I brought this book as I'm a massive Hunger Games fan.
To begin with this book was very interesting & gave a good insight into the authors selection for character names, places & events. But the more I read the more I found I was skipping pages in a desperate bid to find something interesting again. I suppose it'd be a good book to read a few months or even a year after finishing the Hunger Games books - as it'd help refresh your memory & recapture some of the moments. Otherwise, I was a little bit disappointed & bored.
