From the Back Cover

A Guide for Health and Beauty Therapists provides, in two volumes, the most comprehensive guide available for trainee and professional beauty therapists in colleges and in the salon. It explains the fundamental techniques and application of the various treatments available today.
Volume One introduces the basics of anatomy, physiology and electrophysics for the face, hands and feet. It includes the theory behind the technical aspects necessary to ensure a professional approach, and provides a framework for the reader to improve technique and experience in order to assess new procedures, products and equipment as they emerge.
This second edition has been revised to fully meet the requirements of NVQ Beauty Therapy courses and references to such are highlighted in the text. The book has also been thoroughly updated to reflect recent advances in the science of beauty therapy and incorporates numerous new diagrams and photographs to demonstrate massage techniques.
Topics discussed include-
the salon, its layout and suggested equipment, health and safety, security and hygiene
the reception area and responsibilities of the receptionist
a detailed study of the skin, its structure, function and condition, and the factors which influence the type of treatment used
cosmetic product knowledge
simple and corrective make-up and remedial camouflage
types of massage
mask therapy
the use of electrical equipment
nail structure, disorders and diseases, care of the hands and feet, and manicure and pedicure
wax depilation
heat and ultra-violet treatments
This is a core introductory text for students of NVQ courses in Beauty Therapy (C&G 3028), BTEC NC/D and HNC/D Beauty Therapy courses, International Health and Beauty Council Beauty Therapist Certificates and International Beauty Therapy Diplomas. It will also be an excellent reference book for qualified health and beauty therapists.

It is a very good book with lots of facts in it. My only critiscm would be that to find something in particular is not easy. ie I was looking for brief outline of the changes to the epidermis caused by a) Age, b) Sunlight etc. I didn't find it under epidermis I found it under skin, which yes is appropriate but a little confusing when trying to discover how the epidermis works. But it is all in the there you just have to look I guess and this will become easier as I get used to looking in there.

All in all though a very good which was recommended to me by my teacher and she should know.

a bit to in depth for what you need to know 14 July 1999

I found this book a good reference for my beautician course but the book was to much in depth and hard to understand in some subjects.I would suggest the book "the BEAUTY THERAPY FACT FILE" BY Susan Cressey.
