I picked this up as a gift for my father and he has gotten good use out of it. I've also confiscated it occasionally after a scuba dive to try and figure out what on earth I'd just seen.
This book is of a handy size and full of colour illustrations and photographs. The layout is sane and you don't need to be an expert to work to understand the descriptions and other aspects of the entries. The fact that it's such a good size means you are more likely to take it with your or throw it into your scuba bag and it's that usefulness that makes me give this five stars - the fact that there is a good chance it won't just sit there collecting dust on your shelf.
Buy one for the Australian fishing nut nearest you or before you head to Oz for a fishing or diving trip.

Several good books covering the fishes of the world's popular tropical diving destination are available for the under water naturalist. The situation is not as plentiful when it comes to the subtropical and temperate waters of Australia. This book is hence a worthy acquisition for anyone diving also in more Southerly Australian waters. It is well organized according to the phylogenetic relationships of the fishes, and has a brief description of every species going with the pictures. What I found very useful is a distribution map for every species - an outline of Australia with the region a particular fish occurs in marked in color. Definitely a book to recommend.
