Product Description

Product Description

Previous editions of The Guide to Commuteriand have established it as the indispensable 'one-stop-shop' for anyone looking for a home within commuting range of London. Now it has been fully revised and updated to take account of current house prices, new developments and changes within commuterland communities. The book remains as before, following each of the railway lines that radiate out from London's termini, station by station, together with their branches and spurs. In total over 1200 towns and villages in Southern England are described, from Frinton and Ipswich in the east to Bristol and Bath in the west. In each case a there is a summary of the types of property to be found and a representative range of prices is given, together with a succinct summary of the pros and cons of each community in terms of local facilities and amenities and social make up. In short, this book is a godsend for househunters who can quickly narrow down their search to focus on the areas that are most likely to meet their needs without ever leaving the comfort of an armchair.

The book does give you good reviews of villages & towns, with details of schools, local ammenities, time into London on the train and prices of season tickets. However, for me, what lets it down, is that it suggests that if you are looking to "commute" you are essentially looking to be at least 30 mins out of London on the train. It doesn't cover any towns/villages closer in, that are still out of town and the most likely locations of first time buys for younger people who still want to be close into London but be able to buy somewhere affordable. If you are looking to move much futher out however, then its a good book and worth buying.

General overview 7 Nov 2009
This book provides a very high-level overview of towns around the major train lines out of London. I was disappointed with the amount of detail on each town, which was very little and did not allow to make a general impression of the place. When I read the reviews for towns I've visited in the past, it seemed quite high level and frankly quite bland. You'll need to do lots of your own research once you've defined your area.
