It is vital that coaches have the ability to recognise mental health problems in their clients, enabling them to make an informed decision about whether coaching is appropriate. A Guide to Coaching and Mental Health provides an indispensable introduction to the assessment of psychological issues in the context of coaching.
Divided into three sections, the book covers all the legal, ethical and practical considerations. Part I, Working on the Boundary, starts by exploring the distinction between normal and abnormal behaviour. In Part II, What’s Being Said?, the authors introduce fictional case studies, which cover a range of possible mental health issues from mild depression and anxiety, through to psychoses and potentially life-threatening problems. Part III, Categories of Mental Illness, guides the reader through the definition and management of the more common mental health problems.
This accessible and jargon-free guide to identifying mental illness will prove invaluable for coaches and other related professionals, whatever their level of experience.
Andrew Buckley has, for ten years, worked as an individual and team business coach and counsellor. He is a member of the training faculty of the William Glasser Institute, and an accredited member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy.
Carole Buckley qualified as a doctor of medicine in 1980. She is passionate about holistic care, in particular encouraging the understanding of the relationship between mental wellbeing and social and professional functioning.

Very accessible and extremely user friendly guide,

This review is from: A Guide to Coaching and Mental Health: The Recognition and Management of Psychological Issues (Essential Coaching Skills and Knowledge) (Paperback)
Having suffered from a mix of mental health issues in the workplace I immediately understood, recognised and identified with the content of this book. It totally demystifies the subject and would have been an extremely useful resource for my direct line manager as well as those supporting him in the HR team. Once the issues came to light I was extremely well supported by my employers but equipped with the early warning system in this book there's a very good chance that the situation would have been dealt with much sooner.

A must-read for coaches and managers of people,

This review is from: A Guide to Coaching and Mental Health: The Recognition and Management of Psychological Issues (Essential Coaching Skills and Knowledge) (Paperback)
I've seen a pre-publication copy of this book and it really is excellent - hardly surprising really with endorsements by Cary Cooper and Sir John Whitmore! Any coach, mentor and similar, HR manager and welfare officer will find this book really useful with clear descriptions of the signs of mental illness and, more importantly, what to do when they occur.
This isn't just for trainees, or those without a psychology or therapy training, but for everyone in the field - the ethics and implications chapters are really thought provoking, but still balanced and practical.

Essential reading for coaches,
This review is from: A Guide to Coaching and Mental Health: The Recognition and Management of Psychological Issues (Essential Coaching Skills and Knowledge) (Paperback)
This book is a must read for coaches. It's well written and absorbing as well as thorough and highly informative. As a practicing coach I think it's essential reading to ensure we do no harm to our coachees and act in their best interests at all times.
I cannot recommend highly enough.
