Better than the 1st edition, but not perfect, 13 Nov 2005
This review is from: A Guide Book of Morgan Silver Dollars: A Complete History and Price Guide (Official Red Books) (Paperback)
The Bowers book on Morgan dollars is a must for any collector, since it itemises each and every issue of these coins - the most popular coin for collecting in the USA, and also popular in the UK. Each issue from 1878-1904 and 1921 is described and illustrated in some detail, discussing the mintage rates and the curiously individual fates each issue suffered. Some issues were mostly stored for decades, yielding thousands of mint-state coins for collectors to enjoy today. Others were melted down in 1918 and are now extremely rare. Other issues are common in worn condition, but terribly rare in mint state, because they were circulated. These different histories have dramatic effects on the value of a Morgan dollar in any given grade, so buying Morgans without this book to hand would be madness.
The book is clear and very readable, with a lot of background history, and it's certainly interesting with some fascinating insights. Sadly the 2004 edition (1st) was littered with the most amazing mistakes and typographical errors. Many of these were obvious (blatantly obvious in fact) even to a non-expert, leaving one to wonder how many other mistakes there were in the more specialist detail that a non-expert isn't familiar with.
The new (2nd) edition was produced in part to rectify these howlers and has many improvements. Sadly a significant number of the original mistakes have remained uncorrected, I can only assume because there were so many, and also perhaps because the publishers have been issuing so many new titles recently. It will take another edition to make good the remaining mistakes. It's a real shame because in every other respect this is an excellent book.
